Turn Your Voice into Jewelry #WearableWednesday

I know I often associate wearable tech with things that light up or play audio. However in this case, this is tech art with meaning. These acrylic discs represent a voice message, so even though you can’t hear it, you can see it, as discussed on WearableTechWatch.

Voiceprint Jewelry is a CafePress creation, and it starts by recording an audio message at their site. Then, you can select the materials of your necklace, with choices including leather and wood. The discs representing your sound waves are laser cut, and the finished necklace comes with a link to the original recorded message.

I thought this necklace looked familiar, and after some research, I found a similar necklace on our blog by artist David Bizer back in 2012. Now, several artists/companies are using the idea. Maybe they should start making QR code jewelry, so friends and family could scan the jewelry and share an audio clip on their phone.

Speaking of sharing, I do have another use in mind — spy jewelry. You could tamper with the audio waves much like you would any code, so the finished necklace wouldn’t exactly represent your voice. Then, you have the ability to translate the jewelry using a scan device on a phone. Yes, it sounds complicated, but for all we know, someone may be already doing it. Next time you are in the airport, look for people swapping necklaces.

You are probably already thinking of ways to create your own voice jewelry. You could definitely DIY your own discs using a laser cutter or 3D printer, or just hand cut them yourself using traditional woodworking tools or blades. Then again, you could just buy a beautiful work of art from David Bizer.
