Location: New York
URL: http://hannasandin.com

Description:

I am a sculptor, based in NYC. I graduated from RISD in 2003. I have since worked within the arts in various capacities, and own a small jewelry business SAMMA. I have exhibited in the US and abroad, notably a solo show at Fake Estate in 2009, and a group show at PS1 in 2010. I have an upcoming solo show in France, at Galerie Herve Bize, and solo booth this summer at NADA Hudson.

I am seeking a computer programmer, interested in a technical and creative collaboration, to develop existing software tools for an art project, in progress. An interest in working at the intersection of linguistics and art is useful. The short-term goal is to adapt natural language generation for translating a series of sculptures, from visual to verbal, for an upcoming show in the end of July. Future development of the project is possibly government funded for a small catalogue for the show in France, and can expand more on the application of the technical tools to open-ended results.

This project will complete/ compliment a current body of sculptures- generating supplementary material for drawings, writing, and diagrams. Borrowing from visual language of data representation and sentence parsing, the current series of sculptures has used the form of the mobile to generate short corresponding sentences. Applications of computer programming will hopefully accomplish the following technical tasks.

Given a set of ‘seed words’, and a parts-of-speech tagged and parsed tree derived from the physical parts and structure of a sculpture as input:

1) For each word, generate a list of synonyms, each with a part of speech (verb, noun, adjective).
2) Generate all sentences (using the available synonyms with parts-of-speech from 1, and the parsed tree given as input) that conform to the structure of the parsed tree.
3) Perform an optional preening step – I’m not sure exactly what form this will take, but a thought here is to feed the generated
sentence through the tagger and parser in use, and confirm that its structure matches the input structure.
4) A simple web UI to access the tool from my studio – I will arrange hosting and maintenance of the software.

Ideally, the substitutions and word usage are robust, grammatical, and surprising. I’m open to whatever technologies you feel
are appropriate – any accurate tools will do: we might use an implementation of the Brill tagger + Abney parser for 1),
and Wordnet for 2) but these are just some possibilities.

Interested candidates should be in touch by e-mail to sammahanna@gmail.com with a letter of inquiry, suggesting a plan, timetable, and fee structure for completing this project. Questions or requests for further supplementary visuals for clarification are also welcome.

Apply to this job
I can help to design and develop your open product, particularly in terms of geometry, mechanics and usability.

Working from my studio workshop, I research, specify, prototype, model, test and can often batch produce parts using our healthy network of makers in Glasgow. I hold a degree in industrial design and have five years’ industrial experience which includes consumer product design, marine engineering, furniture making and education. Previous clients include Ponoko, James Fisher Underwater Projects, and various Scottish councils and universities. I am developing open design projects at Openthing.org .

Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your project.

Apply to this job
I specialize in computer vision biotracking (for any biologists out there who want to proceduralize the workflow of their experiments). My other focus in is Digital Documentary, where I create traditional and remediated documentary works in many media.

I am highly skilled in design, mechanical and electrical engineering, and filmmaking. I can program in a variety of languages and can do anything with Adobe software. You can toss me on any project and I’ll start chugging away.

Check out my portfolio site for more examples of my works.

Here are two examples anyway:
http://andy.dorkfort.com/science/ttrack/

http://andy.dorkfort.com/documentary/face/visage.html

Apply to this job
