Full-time Ghana Engineering Intern

at BioLite LLC in Ghana, AFRICA

Engineering Intern (Ghana) Summary: Cutting edge clean technology company is seeking a motivated and intrepid summer intern to gather in-field product feedback and provide on-the-ground technical support in Ghana for the world’s largest health trial of the HomeStove™ - the world’s first self-powered, ultra-clean, and highly efficient biomass cookstove. About BioLite: BioLite is a dynamic, rapidly growing, and profitable social enterprise that develops, manufactures and markets consumer energy products for off-grid communities around the world. Our business serves two distinct markets: 1) developing world families living in energy poverty, and 2) outdoor enthusiasts seeking fuel-independent cooking and off-grid power. We address these markets simultaneously through parallel innovation: by incubating core technologies that can serve users in both markets, we are able to re-invest near-term revenue to solve long-term, high-impact problems. Over the last three years, our team has tripled, and sales have doubled each year. Since 2012, we have launched three products, and we expect to launch four core technology products in 2014. TITLE: Field Intern (Ghana) LOCATION: Kintampo, Ghana, (with orientation in Brooklyn, NYC) HOURS: Full‐time, 2-3 Months (flexible) REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering & Emerging Markets Program Manager START DATE: May/June 2014 Key Activities Field Engineer: BioLite is a company that prides itself on getting its hands dirty! With training from our Engineering team in Brooklyn, you will be expected to understand the HomeStove product technology including materials, manufacturing processes, basic combustion & thermodynamics, and basic electronics. Armed with this training, you will make field visits to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose and repair HomeStove units in-country. You will gather data from these visits and make regular reports to the product development and emerging market teams. Designer & ethnographer: As a company focused on continual design improvement, one of your main roles will be to gather and test product feedback on the HomeStove and report these findings to the BioLite engineers and design team behind the development of the HomeStove. Documentarian: As our literal eyes and ears on the ground, you will play a pivotal role in helping our marketing team tell the HomeStove story to BioLite’s engaged global customer base. You will be equipped with a state-of-the-art DSLR Camera, and will be expected to produce periodic status updates of your work (and adventures!) to be shared both with the company and more broadly with our fans and customers Ambassador: As the in-country representative for BioLite, you will serve as the face of the company to study participants and our partners on the ground. Required Qualifications & Experience • Current student or recent graduate with bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field • Problem Solver; while you will have the support of our in-country partners, you will essentially be a team of one in a remote area of Ghana, where circumstance and scarce resources will require you to routinely think creatively to problems both big and small • Team player and self-starter; ability to work collaboratively, but also self‐managing and work well independently • Strong work ethic and drive; with a willingness to work an untraditional work schedule • Strong communication and analytical and skills; the ability to clearly communicate and report problems identified in the field to our team in Brooklyn Desired Experience • Practical experience with soldering and basic mechanical fabrication. • Relevant volunteer or field experience in a developing country (preferably Sub-Saharan Africa) Desired Skills • Photography and videography BioLite’s Technologies and Markets Developing World: Half the planet still cooks on indoor open wood fires and the toxic smoke they emit kills nearly 4 million people every year, twice as many as malaria. BioLite has developed an advanced, affordable, clean- burning stove that combines unprecedented emissions reductions with economically valuable electricity generation. The HomeStove is capable of reducing indoor smoke by more than 90% while cutting fuel use in half. By providing our largely off-grid customers with the ability to charge cell phones and LED lights, our stoves create economic incentive for purchase and continued use, ensuring sustainable delivery of our health and environmental benefits. Funded by the company’s profits and the generous support of USAID, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, and the National Institutes of Health, BioLite is currently conducting large-scale HomeStove pilot programs in India, Uganda, and Ghana. With your help, we will be scaling the product commercially in 2015. Outdoor and Emergency: BioLite has quickly emerged as a leading innovator in the personal energy space. Whether camping in the backcountry or toughing it out during a power outage in the backyard, our core technologies allow people cook meals, boil water, and charge their electronic devices using nothing but sticks and twigs collected around them. Our current product portfolio offers people a green alternative to petroleum cooking, combining the speed and reliability of an advanced stove with the appeal of a traditional campfire all with the added benefit of on-demand electricity, keeping users connected when it matters most. Our product roadmap has exciting new innovations which will continue our expansion in the Outdoor and Emergency markets, allowing people to create, store and share energy in any situation they find themselves. Our products are now in over 70 countries worldwide and are found in all major outdoor retailers, including REI, EMS, and Bass Pro Shops. To Apply: Please submit your resume, cover letter, and a professional writing sample to jobs@biolitestove.com and include “Engineering Intern (Ghana)” in the subject line. Company is not accepting candidates via recruiters.
