Engineering Manager
Available Immediately
Parallax, Inc. is a 40+ employee company located in Rocklin, California. Parallax is well-known for BASIC Stamp microcontrollers and the Propeller chip, an all custom-silicon in-house design. The company’s traditional customer base includes hobby and educational customers with a growing commercial presence from the Propeller.
The Engineering Manager provides leadership, inspiration, direction, coordination, scheduling, work approval and hands-on engineering contribution for a present staff of three engineers. Central to all efforts will be a customer focus on commercial users who design products using the Propeller. Parallax business is evolving to increase design-in support of our commercial customers. This position will work closely with customers who design products using our Propeller chips. As the department and business increases, additional staff will be added to assume the same roles and the Engineering Manager will provide less hands-on engineering and increased direction and coordination to the engineering staff.
The main type of products that will be designed in our Engineering Department include Propeller-based products that also serve as open-source reference designs (i.e., PropScope, Propeller Web Server, etc.). Other less frequent designs (accessories for any microcontroller) include sensors, motor controllers, Ethernet/internet/WiFi compatible devices, and small signal analog interfaces. Some of these designs also have mechanical dependencies such as enclosures, mounting brackets or robotic assemblies. This requires an understanding of design dependencies (a thorough understanding of SolidWorks is not necessary).
Responsibilities
Propeller Engineering and Commercialization
Support individual Propeller commercial design efforts. Provide these customers with product roadmaps, testing/engineering data, code support, etc.
Manage and contribute to Propeller 2 datasheet, coordinating with Parallax R&D team.
Run Propeller characterization efforts for datasheet.
Provide web content for Propeller reference designs (descriptions, schematics, BOMs, etc.) in coordination with internal open-source gurus.
Provide feedback to R&D about customer preferences, monthly.
Product Development
The Engineering Manager provides final approval on design prototype and manufacturing efforts. This includes following processes and maintaining the highest level of quality.
The following applies to all product development efforts.
• Contribute to a vision for new products that sell well through Parallax channels and customer base, involving customer feedback (and internal feedback from Sales, Marketing and Technical Support).
• For new product development efforts, analyze and understand technology, resource needs, and market demand, to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
• Consult with customers (via forums) and internal staff to prepare brief product specifications prior to design.
• Review and understand all aspects of a product development effort, including analog/digital circuitry, PCB layout and visual appearance, firmware and documentation.
• Properly assess effort required to complete the design and ensure it is matched with the appropriate level of effort.
• Evaluation and selection of hardware components and vendors.
• Understanding and ability to direct the following:
Creation of BOMs for procurement and planning.
Direct prototype development.
Test fixtures for production.
Manufacturing packages for internal and external fabrication.
Project documentation and web descriptions.
Administration
Critical to the success of this position is the ability to develop and foster key relationships with Inventory and Production Manager, Asia Manufacturing Manager, Senior Buyer and R&D staff. Further administrative responsibilities include:
• Prepare annual performance reviews and regular progress meetings for each Engineering Department employee.
• Approve paid time off, absences and work schedules.
• Identify and approve any equipment purchases needed for the engineering team; approve staff expenditures.
• Annual travel to Asia to interact with Parallax engineers; support production line needs; and to build relationships with suppliers.
• Improve and write new processes for internal design efforts; post and maintain them on the intranet.
• Interview and recruit new team members; assign, direct, and evaluate their work; and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence. Preliminary additional hires include an entry-level Electronics Engineer and Field Application Engineer.
• Attend three meetings per week less than one hour each: engineering team to resolve project issues (the results of this meeting is posted on our intranet for internal communication); operations meeting for internal communication between departments; and product planning for discussing new product goals before a design is initiated.
• Annually prepare budget for Engineering Department.
Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer or Software Engineering.
• Software experience with PCB layout, Word, Excel, Outlook, project management software, and some familiarity with mechanical design.
• 3-6 years of embedded engineering experience.
• Thorough knowledge of circuit design and analysis.
• Understanding and appreciation for Parallax customer base and products.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and experience with bench top equipment such as power supplies, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
• Familiarity with code writing in ASM/Spin with the Parallax Propeller Chip and BASIC Stamp coding.
• Effective writing skills to prepare high quality technical specifications, documents for the web, and project reports.
• Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills that will include group presentations.
• Effective and professional contributor to problem solving discussions.
• Willingness to participate in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.
• Able to work independently or in a team with minimal reliance on management.
• Demonstrate time management skills to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Open to accept constructive criticism and apply such feedback in an effective and professional manner.
Desired Traits
Ability to motivate and support individual efforts. Parallax values maintaining a work/life balance.
Enthusiasm, positive attitude, ability to work well with others and a friendly, polite demeanor.
Willing and motivated to learn more about the above items as necessary.
Able to guide and contribute to effective meetings.
Able to take on new tasks that arise from future needs in the department/company.
Ensuring quality control in all aspects of the job.
Parallax does not engage in internal politics or associate productivity with being visible. The company values honesty, effort, quality and customer service as much as creativity.
Salary
Salary determined on education, employment, commensurate with experience, qualifications and enthusiasm.
