Research Support Specialist I
Technically oriented person to support a wide variety of X-ray research programs at the Cornell University High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Involves designing, building, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex scientific equipment, and providing service and instruction to staff, scientists, and visitors to the facility.
Would you like like to work in a large, fast paced cutting edge research laboratory? Would you like to support research in a wide variety of ways, from training experimenters to high level design and hands on fabrication of complex scientific equipment?
A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field with at least two years related experience or an equivalent combination, is required. Should have demonstrated skills supporting scientific research in a laboratory setting. Also should have a passion for and be able to demonstrate the ability to design, build, test, troubleshoot and repair electronics including PLC’s, microcontrollers, analog and digital circuits, printed circuit boards, data acquisition systems and motion control. Excellent communication and people skills are necessary. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work occasional evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
We seek candidates who enjoy the working in a technical laboratory, have a team-based approach and mindset, want to work in an innovative and challenging environment and feel a sense of accomplishment supporting researchers. Candidates must have a work history showing strong motivation, good judgment, reliability, ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks under pressure, follow procedures and pay close attention to details. Must communicate well with a diverse range of scientific and technical staff and adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.
