Build Robots! Mechanical Engineer

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the Orbotix engineering team. In this role you will work with our team to help build state-of-the-art mobile, and most importantly fun, gaming robots like our first product, Sphero ( http://www.gosphero.com ).

Role & Responsibilities

-Assist in translating product requirements into mechanical designs.
-Work on accessory ideas like ramps, skins, ect.
-Work on new product designs.
-Understand and articulate technical risks and design margin throughout process.
-Leverage analytical tools to select optimal architecture and verify that subsystems meet design intent, including FEA simulation and spreadsheet-based analysis tools.
-Complete mechanical layouts and detailed part design, creating and/or updating 3D CAD models using Pro-E.
-Leverage rapid prototyping approaches in early design verification, including several prototyping technologies.
-Conduct cross-functional design reviews and implement Design-For-Manufacturing and Assembly disciplines to optimize designs prior to tooling parts.
-Create internal drawing standards and generate appropriately dimensioned drawings with realistic tolerances that assure desired assembly performance using Tolerance Stack Analysis.
-Work in Quality Assurance Capacity to determine appropriate level of component, system, and/or life testing requirements to verify designs.
Obtain and verify that design-intent parts fully comply with all product requirements. Follow up on results from short and long term testing.
-Perform methodical root cause analysis and rapid resolution for any non-compliance in system performance.
-Work with our Far East Operations team in supporting tool qualification, prototype builds and other launch activities at contract manufacturers in China.
-Initiate and process engineering change requests as needed to resolve deficiencies in released designs, reduce costs and/or improve performance.
-Overseas travel to Asia is likely, two to three times per year.

Desired Skills/Experience

-Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
-3 years minimum experience with 3D CAD, preferably using Pro-E Wildfire 4 or 5.
-Injection molding and plastic part design.
-Material selection, especially with plastics.
-Small mechanism design, especially gears, bearings, wheels, linkages, etc.
-ASME drafting standards and dimensional management methods.
-Design mock-up and rapid prototyping methods, such as Objet, SLA, SLS, FDM, and machine shop usage.
-Experience with consumer product development and Asian manufacturing.
-Mobile robotic platform development.

-Must be able to act as an individual contributor in addition to being a strong team player.
-Strong written and verbal communication skills.
