USB Wifi RTL8188S doesn't work

Postby max246 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 2:02 am

I have a usb wifi that has RTL8188S as chip but I can't make it working on my Raspberry PI - Occidentalisv02.
I have tried on the normal version of Raspberry PI and it worked without typing anything to install the driver.

This is my output:

[ 157.963832] usb 1-1.3.3: new high speed USB device number 9 using dwc_otg
[ 158.066508] usb 1-1.3.3: New USB device found, idVendor=0df6, idProduct=005b
[ 158.066557] usb 1-1.3.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 158.066579] usb 1-1.3.3: Product: RTL8188S WLAN Adapter
[ 158.066596] usb 1-1.3.3: Manufacturer: Manufacturer Realtek
[ 158.066613] usb 1-1.3.3: SerialNumber: 00e04c000001

I have checked that I have the driver, I also tried to installed from a guide and loaded it ( http://www.jtek.cz/?p=21 ), why on your version I can't make it work?
There is missing something?

This is the result:

$ ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr b8:27:eb:11:e7:7e
inet addr:192.168.0.17 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

TX packets:82 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:8409 (8.2 KiB) TX bytes:12920 (12.6 KiB)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:1104 (1.0 KiB) TX bytes:1104 (1.0 KiB)

I'd some experience about wifi and I thought that I just need to UP the wlan0 but it didn't work

$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

make sure you're powering it with a high quality power supply. that can cause problems

I also had some intermittent behavior with the miniUSB WiFi ( similar to http://www.adafruit.com/products/814, and then had initial trouble with the larger one Adafruit sells (the one with the tall antenna, http://www.adafruit.com/products/1030). Using Google and trying lots of things, I did find something that seems to work (Someplace i found mentioned they thought it was a bug in the Adafruit distro.). Try this:

Code: Select all
sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Then either try replugging in you USB WiFi, and give it a minute or two to do its thing, or Reboot. In fact, when i first got the larger USB WiFi from Adafruit http://www.adafruit.com/products/1030, it wouldn't work at all until i removed that file, and hasn't had a glitch since.

But as mentioned above, you do need a good power supply. I am using the 7-port USB hub http://www.adafruit.com/products/961 with it's good wall wart power supply.

BTW - the system will regenerate the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file, so if you have similar trouble in the future, you can remove it again.
