Hi,

I'm assembling the ice tube clock. I have got to the point where I have placed the 32.768 kHz clock crystal plus capacitors. I have done that, but notice that I no longer get the beep on power up. Looking at the clock pins on the Atmel processor chip (pins 9 and 10), with a scope, I see the correct frequency, but the voltage swing is only 100mV instead of on the order of 5V as required by the chip spec. I have gone through the Ice Tube troubleshooting checklist on this site, and verified that the 5V supply is working etc. I am wondering if somehow the AVR controller is driving the pins as output instead of input. Is there a quick way to verify that the chip is still running the correct program? I am not familiar with AVR programming, but could dive into it if necessary.

If the clock was beeping on power-up it is most likely correctly programmed. Double check the capacitor values and soldering in the area of the oscillator. If you post photos of both sides of the board we'll have a look too.

I double checked, and took photos of both sides of the board (attached). I will send 3 more photos in another post.

Just to be clear. You did get a beep on power up at one point, but you are not getting it anymore?

The solder joints on the crystal leads, and some of the capacitor leads as well look as if they may not have properly wetted the solder pad. This can result in intermittent conductivity. Re-touch these joints to look like the diagram below:

Yes I was getting the power-on beep, but not anymore.

I will retouch the solder joints.
