kill-a-watt uk version, with a wireless switch

Postby wattuk » Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:58 pm

Hi!

I want to build a tweet a watt, but a uk version, Do you think this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plug-In-Power-a ... 135&sr=8-2) energy monitor would be ok? And if it is, do I have to adapt values of some components used in the project?

I don't know if it is possible, but I want to include a wireless switch as well (using the same process as here: http://www.faludi.com/classes/xbee1work ... ries_1.pdf). Do you think it is possible? If yes, can I use a single Xbee module for transmitting the values measured and the switch signal at the same time (and still have a single receiver connected to the pc)?

Sorry for asking too many questions

It is possible in theory. A lot depends on what you find inside your energy monitor. Reverse engineering takes persistence and luck. Familiarity with the types of circuits and chips involved is a big help. Read through the Tweet-A-Watt tutorial, but keep in mind that the implementation of that energy monitor may be substantially different than the Kill-A-Watt.

In any case, be very careful. You will be working with potentially lethal mains current. If you are not experienced in such things I would not recommend this as a first project.
