SD card issues

Received Wavw Shield, built it, created test wave files, copied wave files to 32 gig SD card - everything works on the shield. A week later I add wave files to sd card and all I get is

Wave test!
Free RAM: 672
Error: Card init. failed!
SD I/O error: 1, 0

sometimes the second number is FF. I reformat the card, add wave files, and check that they work on PC - all OK. It's 32 bit FAT, but I still get the same error. From reading forums this means SD card not found. My soldering skils are good, and I had it working. I've checked the card and it seems to be OK. What else can I test?

you'll probably wanna get ready or go ahead and post some 'close-up', in-focus pics o the top and bottom soldering of the board.


usually this means a bad/cold solder joint from past threads I have seen/read...

but have never worked with a 32GB card myself either..

do running any of the other SD card examples work to initialize card? info?

Post some photos of the front & back of the board. As xl97 says, these symptoms are usually due to an intermittent solder joint somewhere. It is also sometimes due to incompatibilities with the card timing. You might try with a different card if you have one.

I've been soldering a long time and can't remember my last bad solder joint. Photos attached. Tried new SD card, 8G, formatted with SDFormatter v3.1, tried new UNO board. No luck.

Oops, tried uploading .jpg files on IE and Chrome both - no luck. Says the image is bad.

From your original post, it sounds like it was working at one point. And an error of 1,FF is almost always a connectivity problem. That is why I suspect a solder joint. The most common problem joints are the surface mount pins of the SD card holder itself. But you might want to double check pins 10-13 on the digital pin headers, as well as the pins of the buffer/level-shifter chip.

Card timing incompatibilities are another cause of the 1,0 errors. Some cards work better than others. What type of card are you using?

OK, resoldered all pins you suggested and more. Reseated ICs as I put them in sockets. Now getting error 1, 0, then after a reset on Wave board an error 1, FF, second reset gives error 1, 9, third reset gives 1, FF again.

I still get invalid image when tring to upload image file and then it erases the message in this form.

Next suggestion?

Not sure what is preventing the JPG uploads. They may be too big. You can try to re-size them to 800x600.

You might try running the CardInfo sketch in the SD library examples. That will give you more meaningful diagnostics than 1,FF and 1,9. I know for the 1,FF it will tell you to check your wiring. Not sure what the 1,9 error is.

Here's what I get trying CardInfo, not much help. I reduce the photos, hope they appear. Any chance it's a bad IC?

Initializing SD card...initialization failed. Things to check:
* is a card is inserted?
* Is your wiring correct?
* did you change the chipSelect pin to match your shield or module?

to 'me' it looks ok.. I dont see anything that jumps out at me..

I compared it to a pic of mine (which worked fine)

I don't see any obvious problems with the assembly or soldering. Given that it worked before, I don't think it would be an IC problem, unless the buffer chip were somehow subjected to some damaging ESD.

Another possibility is the timing. Some cards work better at slower speeds. You can try slowing things down as described here: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=27265&p=139922

Where is SPI_SIXTEENTH_SPEED declared? Tried adding SD.h and SPI.h in the includes - no go.

It doesn't appear to be in the latest version. Not sure why. Have you tried SPI_QUARTER_SPEED?
