Mintyboost not work

Postby tablet » Wed Dec 05, 2012 4:25 am

Hello,
I have a mintyboost, a solar panel 6V and a USB / DC / Solar Lithium Ion/Polymer charger - v1.0. I connect the boards as in the following picture:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/390

The output voltage of mintyboost is not 5V.
For example, if I connect 7V to mintyboost, the output voltage is not 5v, the output voltage is about 7V.
What happens?
Regards.

Do you have a LiPo cell connected also?
Is the cell charged?
Is the solar panel in full sunlight?
For example, if I connect 7V to mintyboost, the output voltage is not 5v, the output voltage is about 7V.

As the name implies, the MintyBoost is a Boost converter. It is not designed to regulate input voltages higher than the output voltage and you can damage it with too high an input voltage. The maximum safe input for the MintyBoost is 5v.

When connected as shown on the product description page, the maximum input voltage to the MintyBoost will be 4.2v - the output voltage of a fully charged LiPo cell.

Hello, thanks for the information.
I have a LiPo cell connected and the cell is charged. The solar panel is in full sunlight, the output voltage is about 7V and the output voltage in the MintyBoost is 6V, the input voltage in the MintyBoost is about 6V.

Regards.

Post a photo showing how you have everything connected. It should not be possible to get more than 4.2v out of a single LiPo cell.

What is the voltage at the battery terminals with the panel connected?
What is the voltage at the battery terminals with the panel disconnected?

Make sure you have a fresh battery in your meter & verify it against a known voltage source.

Hello,
The voltage at the battery terminals with the panel connected and disconnected is 4.20V.
My meter is fine.

Looking at the design of the charger chip (page 3 of the spec sheet http://www.adafruit.com/datasheets/MCP73871.pdf) The "direction control" will route the input voltage from your panel directly to the load output pins. Since the Minty is a 'boost' converter, it is not going to reduce that voltage either.
