First sketch: Arduino beta tester

I installed Arduino IDE 009 since I figured I should learn this stuff if I’m going to sell Arduino’s (and clones)

My project today was to build a simple NPN Hfe (Beta) meter to do some tests on the now ultra-rare 2sc2291 matched pairs. My multimeter has one but I wanted to make sure I was testing with the same setup as the one in the datasheet, with a Vce of about 6V and Ic = 1mA. The results are in the x0xd0x wiki

This is the breadboard circuit I used:

its similar to the one described on the x0xb0x page, but with the op amp swapped around for NPN’s

The sketch is rather small, I just take the two analog measurements, do a bit of math and spit out the calculated beta. I checked this against my meter and it matched up for lower betas (although not for higher ones, which may mean I’ve got current leaking into the opamp)

MemPot & x0xb0x video

A teaser from Misusage (who made the awesome TileToys a few years ago)…a cute circuit idea to automate knob tweaking! Microcontroller + digital pot + glue = MemPot, a speed-adjustable programmable ‘memory’ potentiometer. Seen here manipulating a modded x0xb0x, yum!

See more videos and DIY instructions (soon, I hope)

x0xb0x adventures!

I was supposed to have three pieces in the Columbia College A+D gallery show D.I.Y. show “pass it on” but the x0xb0x, spokepovs and mintymp3 decided instead to go on a road trip!

x0xb0x boards available

I’m back from a successful endeavor at SXSW interactive, and I’ve uploaded x0xb0x board layout files to Sourceforge. You can grab them from the x0xb0x download page To generate Gerbers, use EagleCAD

If you just want to buy the PCBs, they are available for sale in the webshop!

x0xb0x in Circuit Cellar!

…well, kinda

Back pages of recent C.C. have this ad.

Turns out this “dirt-cheap and not very english-speaking” PCB fab house in China needed some clip art and thought this circuit board fit the bill:

FYI, x0xb0x’s are actually manufactured by Advanced Circuits in Colorado, which is my recommended PCB house: they have not let me down ever!

x0xb0x has a myspace page?

I really need to keep closer tabs on what x0xb0x is doing on the internet. First it torrented some DiVXs from The Pirate Bay. Then it starting trolling craigslist and buying stuff on Amazon with my credit card. Now I find out x0xb0x even has a myspace page!

I blame m0me rath because hes got 4 of them and they probably needed a place to hang out! :P

In other news, I’m putting up a track in the x0xb0x ‘podcast’ nearly every other day! Check it out for the latest, soon I hope to have it automatically syndicated here.

Happy little resistors

andr00 is like a modern day Bob Ross here, giving you the viewer a front row seat at the grueling x0xb0x assembly process.

Listen to the sweet, sweet sound of x0x

The real problem with all these ‘podcasts’ is that people are all ‘talking’ all the time.

Who wants to listen to people talk when instead you could be listening to x0xb0x’s cranking out bassline beats?

So check out the x0xb0x ‘podcast’, either with your RSS reader at http://x0xb0x.libsyn.com/rss or with iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=216371100
Or just stop by http://x0xb0x.libsyn.com There’s already a bunch of demo tunes up there.

Got something to show? Submit your own by emailing me or posting it to the x0xb0x forums! (The mp3 will be hosted on libsyn so there’s no worries about dealing with traffic!)

x0xb0x Clear Acrylic Panels

Its like post-cyber-retro action in here, with the new clear acrylic panels available for the x0xb0x. These are cut and etched using a 35W lasercutter for precision & good looks. New x0x orders can add this, older x0x users can grab a set for $30 from the adafruit webshop.

Valley girl

Today, for your amusement, I present my very best impression of a valley girl engineer. Does anyone out there have a Final Cut Pro filter to cut out the audio every time I say “like” “so” and “umm”? kthxbye!

Also, Israeli Minty! Ironically if I actually showed up in Tel Aviv with one of these I’d probably get shot cause it looks like a detonator. Whee!

x0xb0x third run

halfway done, looks likely that everyone on the waiting list will get a chance. still making my way though it, so be patient & stuff!

Also, latest firmware is v1.04 (2/6/06), up on sourceforge, with many many bugs fixed and new functionality!

  • USER A is now midi-sync’d pattern edit
  • keyboard mode has LEDs
  • setting the midi addresses: now follows the bank knob
  • a very bad off-by-one-note error in midisync mode
  • pattern edit mode sends out midi start/stop
  • fixed misplaced slide bug in pattern stepwrite mode
  • fixed extra-note in track play mode bug
  • fixed one note delay in midisync
  • added ‘slide’ output on midi

OMG! Happy new year!

For the new year, I stayed at home & organized all the x0xb0x stuff for the third run.
