Position Summary
Do you have a passion for software and experience design? Can you build production-level software and work with a wide a range of software and design tools to prototype physical and interactive experiences? Do you want the opportunity to conceive and build the next generation of toys and apps?

IDEO’s Toy Lab is a faced paced and exciting division of IDEO (http://www.ideo.com), and we’re looking for a creative, multi-talented software engineer to implement playful and fun ideas on exciting new platforms, including the iPhone. The role is a hybrid between software engineeringAND physical toy and game prototyping efforts. The position is based in our Palo Alto location

Key Activities
The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to engineer and support development of iPhone applications for kids (http://www.ideotoylab.com). The ideal candidate has 1-3 years experience building iPhone applications or, at minimum, expertise in C/C++ and object oriented programming environments. Experience with interaction design and multiple software tools (Python, Unity, etc.) is helpful. The role involves production level coding capabilities – so an understanding of device architectures and memory management is required.

The candidate will also contribute to the creation of physical toy and game prototypes. Thus experience with electronics, embedded software development (Pic, Arduino, etc.) or creative tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) is beneficial but not required. Last, an interest in toys and designing experiences for kids is required!

Additional Skills Required

*Prototyping skills: Successful applicants can create quick software prototypes to test feasibility and allow for rapid evolution of ideas.

*Team skills: Collaborate and communicate constructively with other team members

prototype and build micro-controller and embedded systems electronic components

develop computer vision algorithms

construct flying robot airframes

develop flying robot simulations

participate in flight testing

Our ideal candidate:

is pursuing a Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering degree

Looking for someone to help us debug why our bootloader process (using arduino IDE and mkii) is not working consistently.

We designed a very simple arduino pro mini (almost exact, moved a few pins around) and are having erratic results on programming the bootloader. It uses the atmega328p au (smd TQFP) chip.

We have scoped it, and found in most failed cases, the SPI clk is ok, MOSI going in ok, and MISO coming out seems to be not responding, or very weak signal at best on the failed units.

Ironically, the same board, parts kit, sometimes works flawlessly. We are using a mkII atmel ISP programmer. (same results using arduino UNO)

Thinking of building a fixed jig with zif TQFP adapter to test as isolated as possible the atmega328p AU chip only. Putting in an oscillator as optional element in case chip is set to external clock ?

Looking for someone more familiar with all the possible pitfalls of a TQFP chip, and ways of isolating loading/setting fuses, and help us prep for a production run.

We can provide parts/schematics/layouts, and current errors.
Like to get a fixed bid, on a set of troubleshooting techniques , and exploring some of our working/not working chips. Expect to pay for a time block of hours, that could be estimated to troubleshoot our scenario, and perhaps make the jig for us as well.
