Inkscapes Interactive Drawing Performance

Inkscapes by Adrià Navarro and DI Shin:

An interactive drawing performance designed for the 120 by 11 feet video wall at the InterActive Corps (IAC) building in New York. Three artists draw on their iPads to create new content every time the piece runs. The narrative is guided through the dialog between performers and the giant screen, which evolves and transforms the drawings over time.

There are dozens of coloring and painting apps for iPad. But there’s only one that’s amazing enough to be called “Crayola.”

The iMarker™ digital stylus is the key. Like a marker, crayon, pen and paintbrush in one, iMarker creates favorite Crayola colors within the ColorStudio HD app. iMarker looks like a Crayola marker, but is safe to use with the Multi-Touch display of your iPad. The ColorStudio HD app automatically differentiates between iMarker and your child’s finger taps and swipes, allowing intuitive, creative play without having to toggle between modes. Your child enjoys the accuracy and ease of a stylus without giving up direct manipulation of the creative space.

Pictures, animations, sound effects, music — ColorStudio HD always has something new to discover and color. And new pictures are available through ongoing updates automatically when you sync your iPad.

Parents can share the work their children have created by printing it (requires iOS 4.2 or later) or through email and Facebook.

Put it all together and you get the most amazing coloring book ever, with all your favorite Crayola crayons, paints, pencils, markers and more in a convenient no-ink, no-mess, kid-safe package.

With Crayola ColorStudio HD, Griffin and Crayola are creating new ways for children to color, draw, and discover in the digital age.

Sesame best practices guide for children’s app development @ The Sesame Workshop Blog.

Touch screen technology is revolutionizing interactive digital experiences for children. No longer do our little ones need to wait to learn to navigate a mouse or press keyboard keys in order to access a host of interactive content designed for them. Instead, we see toddlers and preschoolers confidently navigating their parents’ iPhones, iPads, and other touch screen devices with astonishing agility and purpose. The explosion of apps for young children is not surprising; there is high demand and high appeal.

REWORK_ App (Philip Glass Remixed)

REWORK_ (Philip Glass Remixed) is an interactive tour through the amazing new REWORK_ album, produced by Beck that remixes Philip Glass’ music. The app includes eleven interactive visualizations corresponding to eleven of the remix songs, along with an interactive “Glass Machine” that lets people create their own music inspired by Philip Glass’ early music.

The idea for the REWORK_ album came together during a conversation between Philip Glass and his friend and new collaborator Beck. The pair recruited producer Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Björk, Lou Reed) to help assemble a collection of remixes of Glass’ works by a list of critically acclaimed artists including Beck himself, Tyondai Braxton, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Dan Deacon, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing, Memory Tapes, Silver Alert, Pantha du Prince, My Great Ghost and Peter Broderick.

To complement the album, app developer Snibbe Studio (creator of Björk’s Biophilia app) created the REWORK_ app to give fans an interactive musical experience.

What a gorgeous app.

Adafruit Holiday Gift Guide 2012: iDevices

Here is a list of our favorite products to hack, mod, or make your Apple iDevice better.  Have no fear Android fans, we will post a similar gift guide for you soon.

Aluminum iPhone 4S 0.8mm 5-Point Star/Pentalobe Screwdriver - We tried half a dozen different 5-point star/”pentalobe” screwdriver tools to find the one we liked the most The body is made from a single piece of aluminum and has nice knurled grips. The end-cap rotates so you can keep the body steady while rotating. The tip is nicely machined and is magnetic so it holds the miniscule screws in place while inserting/removing them.  Get the iPhone 4 version here.

Clear No-Logo iPhone Replacement Back – iPhone 4S - Turn your iPhone 4S invisible! OK well maybe not invisible, but with this clear back you can gaze deeply into the inner works of the iPhone – great for when you want a geeky cyber-look or want to place a visible RFID tag inside the phone. This kit comes with a clear plastic back and two basic screwdrivers (one pentalobe, one phillips – use whichever your phone has) to remove the back and replace it. Get the iPhone 4 version here.

iOS Sensor Apps with Arduino by Alasdair Allan - Turn your iPhone or iPad into the hub of a distributed sensor network with the help of an Arduino microcontroller. With this concise guide, you’ll learn how to connect an external sensor to an iOS device and have them talk to each other through Arduino. You’ll also build an iOS application that will parse the sensor values it receives and plot the resulting measurements, all in real-time.

DIY Stitchable iPhone 4 & 4s Case – Individualize your iPhone 4 or 4s with this crafty, stitch-able protective case. The perforated cover (choose from black or white) allows you to cross stitch your own designs to create a one-of-a-kind fashion item. The kit includes 3 different colors of embroidery floss (you can get more colors from craft stores), a needle, and a few design ideas to get you started.

Redpark TTL Cable for iOS – The Redpark TTL Cable for iOS is the latest revision of the popular RedPark Serial Cable. The main difference between this and the original is that a RS-232 serial to TTL adapter is no longer required. This means you can connect it directly to an Arduino using only jumper wires. No soldering and no adapters required.

The RedPark cable is the first and only cable approved by Apple to allow hobbyists to connect their iOS devices to external microcontrollers and sensors! With this cable, you can open up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and let your imagination run wild! Use external sensors in your iOS apps! Talk to an Arduino with your iPhone! The possibilities are unlimited!

iSticks: How to make a drumstick for an iPad.

Ever wanted to play drums on your iOS device — without actually destroying it? Check out this great Instructables project from aymans:

Multi-touch is a wonderful thing.  But sometimes, the act of creating is done with a tool, like a drumstick or a stylus. It turns out, it’s easy to make a set of drumsticks for a modern capacitive device (like an iPad). You just need a few special things.

The sticks work in any application since they send the same sort of signal your hand does.  I made a few iPad apps that are being submitted to the Apple store…till they become available, the Magic Piano is super fun with them.

Tangible Music Player

Instructables user XenonJohn writes:

This is an Arduino based iPod hackaudio project that allows you to select tracks for playback from an attached iPod Touch simply by placing cards on flat upper surface of the machine.

The cards can be placed in small plastic boxes with a picture of the album cover on one side to make small blocks more suitable for small hands to manipulate. Originally designed for disabled child. Since then people, teachers I know and so on, have been urging me to “do something with it” so this is an easier to set up and use quasi “tablet” version.

membranekeypad

Membrane Matrix Keypad + extras – 3×4– Punch in your secret key into this numeric matrix keypad. This keypad has 12 buttons, arranged in a telephone-line 3×4 grid. It’s made of a thin, flexible membrane material with an adhesive backing (just remove the paper) so you can attach it to nearly anything. The keys are connected into a matrix, so you only need 7 microcontroller pins (3-columns and 4-rows) to scan through the pad.

We include a 7-pin extra-long header strip so you can plug this into a breadboard with ease.

iPhone Light Mod – Illuminate your Apple!

Recently our friend in China sent us a kit for modding the iPhone– it lights up the Apple logo on the back! We can’t carry these in the store because the kit comes with a trademark-infringing replacement back, but it was certainly a fun project to try! However, we do carry replacement backs, screwdrivers, and other iDevice accessories. Watch the video on YouTube (please subscribe!) and Vimeo.

Circuit Playground 1.6.1 – optimized for iPhone 5 & remembers your input

Circuit Playground

Hot on the heels of v1.6, Circuit Playground’s 1.6.1 update takes full advantage of the iPhone 5′s four inch display, adding newly optimized layouts throughout the app. This latest update also streamlines user interface elements for all iOS devices.

Plus – every calculator & converter now remembers your input values and mode selections, so you can always pick up where you left off from a previous session. And if need be, all input values can be reset via the Options menu. This feature was available for a few calcs previously, but now works throughout the app.

Be sure to grab the 1.6.1 update from the App Store if you haven’t already. And if you did – I deem you awesome!

Circuit Playground 1.6 – Hardware Calcs, New Pinouts, & yes – more!

Circuit Playground

Circuit Playground’s 1.6 update brings another heaping helping of electronics assistance to our highly nutritious iOS app. Be sure to grab it fresh from the App Store if you haven’t already. Let’s dig in to what’s new on the menu in 1.6 -

• Resistor Divider Calculator

Enter any three of the four values: Vin, Vout, R1, & R2 – and your voltage divider is ready for the breadboard.

• Heat Sink Calculator

Make sure that heat sink can keep your component (relatively) cool while in use – provide the top four values, then enter Power or Junction Temp to calculate the remaining. Temperature can be given in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

• Wavelength to Color Converter

It’s a little tough to visualize an LED’s color when you only have its light wavelength go by. Input that nanometer value into the Wavelength to Color Converter for a preview of the color + relevant RGB/Hex values. Alternatively – use the color slider to find a color’s wavelength.

• Trace Width Calculator

Ensure your PCB traces can handle your circuit’s current – calculate the required trace width by providing 4 values for your project. Includes unit options for temperature & length values.

• Quarter Wave Calculator

Find the antenna length you’ll need to use for a given frequency, or the corresponding frequency for a given length. Length can be specified in feet/inches or metric value.

• New Pinouts for connectors, ICs, & boards

We’ve added a bunch of useful pinout diagrams to the app including – Raspberry Pi GPIO, MAX232, LM386, 74HC595, USB (A&B), RS232 (DB-9), VGA (DB-15), Ethernet (RJ-45), 16×2 LCD, 78xx, & 78Lxx

• Show & Tell more!

Show & Tell now lets you share multiple pics & video with Adafruit. Choose up to 3 photos and/or 1 video clip to represent your project – tap a thumbnail image to review each piece of media or remove it from your submission. Of course you can also use your iPad/iPhone/iPod’s camera to grab new pics or video – each one will automatically be saved to your device’s photo library.

Also – Circuit Playground 1.6 also adds support for iOS 6 & requires iOS 4.3 or later. Changing calculator pages on iPad can now be done with a two-finger swipe across the main view.

Circuit Playground 1.6 is available now on the App Store and is a free update for existing users. Bon appetit!
