Wearable Computers Are the Next Big Devices, Report Says – NYTimes.com.

The wearable computing wars are about to begin, says a report released Tuesday by Forrester Research.

The report predicts that consumers will begin experimenting more with wearables over the coming year, specifically around health and fitness, navigation, social networking and gaming. This new theme among consumers will hasten big tech companies to begin creating wearable computing products.

NEW PRODUCT – 2 x 2032 Coin Cell Battery Holder – 6V output with On/Off switch

Window-147
NEW PRODUCT – 2 x 2032 Coin Cell Battery Holder – 6V output with On/Off switch. This tiny coin cell battery holder is ideal for small portable or wearable projects. It holds two 20mm coin cells (2032 are the most popular size) in series to generate 6V nominal. (If you want only 3V, we suggest sticking a crumpled piece of tin foil in one of the slots.) 20mm coin cells are popular as they are used in keychain lights, so they are easy to get, and fairly low cost. They tend to have about 220mAh capacity so this holder would give you 6V @ 220mAh with two cells.

The holder is made of plastic and snaps open and closed. You can tape it closed if you need more security than just the plastic snap. A nice extra is the on/off switch up top. We had the factory place a 2mm JST PH connector on the end but you can cut it off if you want to solder on a different connector.

This item does not include any 2032 coin cells. We do stock those separately, so if you want batteries to go with this, please pick up two of them!

  • Weight: 4.7 grams when empty, 10.5 grams with two 2032 batteries installed
  • Size: 53mm x 23mm x 6mm
  • 6″ long (150mm) wires

Adafruit in the New York Times – Wearable Electronics Are Making a Statement – @nytimes

Pt 698

Wearable Electronics Are Making a Statement – Novelties – NYTimes.com.

If you want to try your own hand at creating a computerized, electronic glow, Adafruit Industries, a New York company that makes and sells kits and components, will soon introduce a small, wearable microprocessor called Flora to control LEDs or other electronic adornments. Becky Stern, who leads the company’s wearable electronics group, will develop projects and kits based on it for crafters. “Pop stars have costumes made by ateliers at huge cost,” Ms. Stern says, adding that her company’s products would “let you make these electronic wearables at home for a fraction of that.”

The Flora platform from Adafruit should spur the wearable-computer movement, Professor Hartman says. “It has built into it all of the hardware needed to program,” she says, as well as the ability to link to GPS and Bluetooth, among other components.

One Flora kit, meant for a handbag, will offer a GPS sensor linked to a LED display. “You won’t have to take your cellphone out to check for directions,” says Limor Fried, an electrical engineer and founder of Adafruit. “The bag will have a big arrow to tell you which direction to go.” The kit’s price will be less than $100, not including the cost of the handbag, she says.

A future kit based on Flora will create video displays on the back of a jacket, says Phillip Torrone, a senior editor at Make magazine and creative director at Adafruit. “The display will be low-resolution at first,” he says. “But it will be recognizable as video.”

Adafruit will also develop apps for iPads, iPhones and Android devices, Ms. Fried says. Hobbyists can then make T-shirts for joggers, for instance, that include LEDs that glow red or orange when air quality is poor, with a Bluetooth connection to tweet the information to other joggers.

Ms. Fried at Adafruit says she looks forward to a time when people will routinely modify the style of their shoes, jackets, T-shirts or handbags with circuitry. Then, she says, Bill Cunningham, the fashion photographer for The New York Times who has long roamed the streets for the latest looks, will have a new trend to cover: LED fashions.

Read the whole thing – great overview, in print too. A version of this article appears in print on February 26, 2012, on page BU5 of the New York edition with the headline: “Which Way to the Ball? I’ll Ask My Gown”.

Becky Stern joins Adafruit as the director of wearable electronics group

Becky 800

Becky Stern is joining Adafruit as the director of our wearable electronics group – here’s her post on MAKE and on her site

I’m ecstatic to announce my new position at Adafruit Industries, heading up the wearable electronics group. It feels great to finally be able to tell you all about my new chapter starting today. Here’s my farewell post on MAKE with a little recap of my greatest hits in the four years I made CRAFT videos, blogged my socks off, and co-hosted Make: Live.

Please welcome Becky everyone! We added her to our Adafruit G+ team circle.

NEW PRODUCT – Needle set – 3/9 sizes – 20 needles for conductive thread and wearable electronics parts

Window-75

NEW PRODUCT – Needle set – 3/9 sizes – 20 needles for conductive thread and wearable electronics parts. Mighty needles, sew like the wind! This needle set is the only one you’ll need for any sort of hand sewing, especially using our conductive thread and wearable electronics parts.

Window-1-42

Each pack contains 20 gold-eye sharps, with eye sizes ranging from #3 (1.75″ long) to #9 (1.35″ long). The two #3′s (the largest) are too large to pass through the sewable coin cell holder but otherwise are easy to use and thread. The four #9′s (the smallest) are a little difficult to thread so you may not want to use them with our conductive thread – they’ll be easier to use with normal thread however. The remaining 14 needles are perfect for use with our 2-ply stainless conductive thread, 3-ply stainless conductive thread or stainless conductive thin yarn.
