<p>The batteries come pre-attached with a genuine 2-pin JST-PH connector as shown and include the necessary protection circuitry. Because they have a genuine JST connector, not a knock-off, the cable wont snag or get stuck in a matching JST jack, they click in and out smoothly. </p>

<p>The included protection circuitry keeps the battery voltage from going too high (over-charging) or low (over-use) which means that the battery will cut-out when completely dead at 3.0V. It will also protect against output shorts. However, even with this protection <strong>it is very important that you only use</strong> <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/category/44_138">a LiIon/LiPoly constant-voltage/constant-current charger to recharge them</a> <strong>and at a rate of 150mA or less</strong>. <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/1304">We suggest our Micro Lipo charger, which has a 100mA default rate</a>. Like most lipos, the batteries we sell do not have thermistors built in. This is why we suggest charging at 1/2C or even less &#8211; 100mA is a good rate, and available from any USB port if using a USB-powered charger.</p>
<p><strong>Additional safety notes:</strong> Do not use a NiMH/NiCad/lead-acid charger! Also, do not abuse these batteries, do not short, bend, crush or puncture. As with all Lithium ion polymer batteries and with any power source &#8211; they should be used by experts who are comfortable working with power supplies.</p>

<blockquote><p>Being an avid photographer, I have always found it difficult keeping the batteries for my shoe mount flash organized. I have bought many different cases over the years that all claimed to solve the issue of keeping dead batteries separate from charged batteries. Unfortunately these cases usually broke after a few months of use, or they didn&#8217;t really do a good enough job for me. Being the resourceful maker I am, I decided to hit up Thingiverse and see if anyone had created a battery case that would hold 4 AA Rechargeable batteries. I was in luck and found this <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:57281">Customizable Battery Case</a>. I modified it using the Makerbot Customizer and <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:66107">placed a recessed label on the top and bottom</a> that says &#8220;Charged&#8221; and &#8220;Dead&#8221; respectively. Print time is about 120 minutes for 2 sets. </p>
<p>I printed several of the cases on my <a href="http://www.lulzbot.com/">Lulzbot AO-100 3D printer</a>, (<a href="http://www.themakersworkbench.com/reviews/review-lulzbot-ao-100-3d-printer-part-1">reviewed here</a>) and used the default settings of .40mm layer height with a .50mm nozzle. Plastic was Red ABS from Lulzbot, and was printed at 230c with the heated bed set to 110c. The bed is covered in boroxilicate glass that is inturn covered in PET tape with an ABS Glue layer applied with a paper towel.  These holders fit the super long life, super low discharge <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UG41XW/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B004UG41XW&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=themakecom-20">Sanyo Enloop 2000mAh AA Batteries</a> perfectly. </p></blockquote>

<li>Normal Duracell Batteries (1150 mAH capacity): 20 % charge 40 min duration</li>
<li>Sanyo eneloop rechargeable (2000 mAH capacity) 40 % charge 1 hr. duration</li>
<p>They do make higher capacity AA batteries, so you could improve on the performance.</li>
</ul>
<p>What I found is that the normal Duracell Batteries got extremely hot while they charge my phone, while the eneloop batteries got warm but were ok to touch.</p>
<p>With the unit 1.2 oz &#038; (2) AA batteries 1.8 oz. the entire unit only weighs in at 3 oz.!! With an extra set of batteries still brings you in under 5 oz. So far this is the lightest weight option that I have found available. In addition, using rechargeable batteries that can be recharged up to 1500 times, saves money on batteries. You could put a charger in your bounce box if you really wanted to, but I&#8217;m thinking the rechargeables might be a better option for section hiking.

<blockquote><p>As I mentioned in the <a href="http://rhb.me/2012/11/synchronized-led-ring-construction-details/">LED Ring construction post</a>, I wanted to make sure 4 AA batteries would power my 25 RGB LEDs through a good 3+ hours of trick-or-treating. The <a href="http://learn.adafruit.com/battery-power-for-led-pixels-and-strips/estimating-running-time">Adafruit doc</a> provides a good battery life estimate, but I figured I might as well measure it.</p>
<p>Fortunately, I had a <a href="http://www.ni.com/mydaq/">myDAQ</a> handy, and hooked it up to measure battery current and voltage (above). (Note: the power consumed by the 1N4001 diode is not measured with this setup.)</p>
<p>I then wrote a quick LabVIEW VI to measure &#038; log the battery voltage and current every second.  This way I could see the voltage and current drop as the batteries discharged….</p></blockquote>

<h3><a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/322">12mm Diffused Thin Digital RGB LED Pixels (Strand of 25) &#8211; WS2801</a></h3>
<p>RGB Pixels are digitally-controllable lights you can set to any color, or animate. Each RGB LED and controller chip is molded into a &#8216;dot&#8217; of silicone. The dots are waterproof and rugged. There are four flanges molded in so that you can &#8216;push&#8217; them into a 12mm drill hole in any material up to 1.5mm/0.06&#8243; thick. They&#8217;re typically used to make outdoor signs. <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/738">We also have flat-backed pixels that are essentially the same, but are not as long and thin.</a></p>
<p>
The pixels are connected by a 4-conductor cable. +5V (Red), Ground (Blue), Data (Yellow) and Clock (Green). Data is shifted down from one pixel to the next so that you can easily cut the strand or attach more onto the end.</p>
<p>
Each dot is digitally controlled, with an internal 8-bit PWM LED driver (24-bit color for 16 million different shades). The pixels must be clocked by a microcontroller, we have an example code linked below that works on an Arduino, it should be simple to adapt it to any other microcontroller. </p>
<p>
The pixels use 8mm diffused RGB LEDs, with a 120 degree beam width. The total max brightness of all LEDs is about 1600mcd but with the light more evenly distributed &#038; mixed than a clear LED. (Please note: mcd ratings of LEDs are notoriously inflated by most LED sellers, so be extra-skeptical when reviewing LED ratings!)</p>
<p>
Sold by the strand, each strand has 25 pixels in series! Each strand has two JST SM 4-pin connectors so you can connect multiple strands in a row, as many as you wish</b>, just watch for how much current they want. We now have LED pixel strands with the power wires (red &#038; blue) spliced out so its really easy to connect 5VDC in using a <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/368">2.1mm jack terminal adapter</a>. We have a <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/276">5V/2A supply that should be able to drive 2 or more strands</a> and a <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/658">5V/10A supply that can drive up to 160 LEDs all lit up at once</a></p>
<p> If you want to connect to the <b>input</b> of a strand (to wire it to power and a microcontroller) please get a <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/579">receptacle</a> connector. If you want to connect to the <b>output</b>, get a <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/products/578">plug</a> cable. </p>
<p>
You can drive these with an Arduino using any two microcontroller digital pins, <a href="https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-WS2801-Library">check this library which also has example code</a> to demonstrate the strands and <a href="http://www.ladyada.net/products/rgbledpixel/"><b>be sure to read our very detailed tutorial on usage!</b></a></p>

<p>In sewing, strings of various thickness and stiffness are used for piping, a type of trim inserted into a seam to define the edges or style lines of a garment or bag.</p>
<p>A team of researcher at LG Chem seems to add another function to the piping: they developed a Li-Ion battery in string form just a few millimeter thick, is bendable and can even be knotted without compromising it&rsquo;s battery function.</p>
<p>The energy storage technology is based on Li-Ion chemistry just like conventional Li-Po batteries only twisted into a round, fine string instead in a flat, geometrical form factor.</p>
<p>Thin strands of nickel and tin coated copper wires form the anode. The researcher then spin the coated copper wires into metal yarn, wrap it around a rod to form a spring shape which functions as structural element of the string battery as well as the anode.</p>

<p>This inverter requires 6V input (it works great with our<a href=https://www.adafruit.com/products/830> 4xAA battery holder</a>) and it can drive 2-3 meters (7 to 10 feet) of our <a href=https://www.adafruit.com/category/50_78>high-brightness EL wire</a> OR 1 meter (3 feet) of <a href=https://www.adafruit.com/category/50_79>EL tape</a> OR a 10cmx10cm piece of <a href=https://www.adafruit.com/category/50_81>EL panel</a> continuously for about 21 hours (off of 4xAAs).</p>

<p>There is a switch for selecting steady/sound/off modes &#8211; steady is always on. Comes with a single 2.5mm pitch female JST connectors, standard for all the EL wire and tape we carry. Theres also two power wires, youll need to connect these to a 6VDC power source.</p>
<p>You can plug any of our EL wire/tape into this inverter directly. To connect a raw piece EL wire to this, youll want a <a href=http://www.adafruit.com/products/319>male connector wire</a></p>
<p>The EL inverter requires a load to stabilize itself. <strong>Do not run the inverter without at least 2 ft of EL wire attached!</strong> Otherwise the inverter can spike and damage itself</p>
<p>Like all inverters weve used, the 2000 Hz oscillation is slightly audible. To reduce the squeaking, we suggest opening up the case padding it with <a href=http://www.mcmaster.com/#neoprene-foam-tape/=a08kit>thick foam tape/weatherstripping</a>. Squirting some hot glue around the capacitors may also help. We managed to get it silent this way.</p>

<p>The batteries come pre-attached with a genuine 2-pin JST-PH connector as shown and include the necessary protection circuitry. Because they have a genuine JST connector, not a knock-off, the cable wont snag or get stuck in a matching JST jack, they click in and out smoothly. </p>
<p>The included protection circuitry keeps the battery voltage from going too high (over-charging) or low (over-use) which means that the battery will cut-out when completely dead at 3.0V. It will also protect against output shorts. However, even with this protection <b>it is very important that you only use <a href="http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=38&amp;products_id=259">a LiIon/LiPoly constant-voltage/constant-current charger to recharge them</a> and at a rate of 1200mA or less.</b></p>
<p>Like most lipos, the batteries we sell do not have thermistors built in. This is why we suggest charging at 1/2C or even less &#8211; 1200mA max in this case. Even 500mA is a good charge rate, which is how much you can get from a USB port.</p>
<p><b>Additional safety notes:</b> Do not use a NiMH/NiCad/lead-acid charger! Also, do not abuse these batteries, do not short, bend, crush or puncture. As with all Lithium ion polymer batteries and with any power source &#8211; they should be used by experts who are comfortable working with power supplies.</p>
