The adage that ‘form follows function,’ seems simple enough, but putting it into practice involves a plethora of pitfalls, especially when applied to manufacturing hardware and getting a project out into the hands of users. This talk covers ‘design for manufacturability,’ and ‘ethnography of use,’ which are two key concepts that designers need to understand in order to maximize a project’s success. We’ll then reduce those concepts to practical tips, tricks, rules and guidelines for getting your hardware made correctly -and- made to be used.”
Scroll through to 42:30 in the ustream archive of her section to see her entire talk!
Stephen Wolfram and Ladyada at Maker Faire! At a past event Stephen and Ladyada (along with w0z) discussed many engineering calcs’ and they all were added to Wolfram alpha! Thanks again Stephen!

Just a reminder that we’re now officially one month away from the Open Hardware Summit on September 27th in NYC!
This is going to be an awesome event! An amazing array of speakers, including our friends Akiba from Freaklabs, Erin ‘RobotGrrl’ Kennedy and Amanda ‘w0z’ Wozniak, coupled with a new venue (Eyebeam)!
There are only about 75 tickets left, so if you’re planning to attend and haven’t gotten your ticket yet, head over to the OHS website and get ‘em while you still can! A ticket to World MakerFaire is included in OHS Admission.
I’m very excited to see some new names alongside some long-time OSHW luminaries, including keynote speaker Chris Anderson, Akiba from Freaklabs, Josef Prusa, Erin ‘RobotGrrl’ Kennedy, Ian Lesnet od Dangerous Prototypes and Adafruit BFF Amanda ‘w0z’ Wozniak! This year looks to be even more info-packed than last year, and benefits from the larger space afforded by the new location at Eyebeam in Manhattan.

Jonathan Feldman talks about the future of Open Source Hardware in a commentary for Information Week.
Those of us with gray hair remember when mainstream companies viewed open source software with extreme skepticism–that is, until it became apparent that the Internet backbone was running reliably on OSS. Now attention is turning to open source hardware.
Open source hardware? Really?
Really.
If you’ve been following the Maker Movement, you’re already in the loop. Just as many open source iterations and eyes changed the face of software, so it will go with hardware. Want to build a USB battery charger out of a mint container and other widely available components? Limor Fried (aka Lady Ada) to the rescue, with her “minty boost” USB charger.
Surely this movement is for hobbyists only, right? You don’t want to fork out $50 for a USB battery charger, so you fork out $20 for the kit and work on it with your buddies over the weekend.
Well, there’s a larger world out there. Like open source software, open source hardware started among hobbyists and will make its way into the corporation.

Google is allowing some accounts to broadcast and record – Ladyada is trying this out, with your help
Previously we broadcasted the hangouts on Google to Ustream using their Producer tool to capture the hangout. We’re still using Ustream for “ASK AN ENGINEER”.
So if anything goes wrong, it’s all very new, but that’s also part of the fun
I made a thermistor-based, water-resistant temperature sensor to be used with a micro controller. Here I document the process on how to get the thermistor calibration data.
Recently, my friend w0z visited after 28c3 and we ended up checking out Segor, a brick-and-mortar electronics shop in Berlin. It’s to me like a candy shop is to kids. Among other things, athermistor module picked my interest, mostly because I had never used one before.
The thermistor module I got came as a thermistor and an op-amp on a PCB. I hooked it up to an Arduino’s analog input pin and sure enough I could see the input data change when I exposed the sensor to warm air.
A really good summary of how to use thermistors and solve the Steinhart-Hart equation.
It’s true that I posted the video of the Open Hardware Summit version of this talk back in September, but that was shot with my Flip video and as a result you couldn’t always read the beautiful slides. The video production here is a lot better — meanwhile, the talk is still awesome!
Awesome engineer and Adafruit BFF Amanda ‘w0z’ Wozniak gave this great presentation at the 2011 Open Hardware Summit. In the talk, she discusses the design process as a critical subject of project documentation. You can check out the slideshow PDF here. It’s annotated with a transcript of the talk — look for the speech bubble in the upper left-hand corner. Awesome engineer and Adafruit BFF Amanda ‘w0z’ Wozniak gave this great presentation Thursday at the 2011 Open Hardware Summit. In the talk, she discusses the design process as a critical subject of project documentation. Sharing the end project (and the related design files) is not enough. In order for people to really learn from what you’ve done (and/or support it after you’ve moved on), folks need to understand the choices you made, and your methodology for making those choices — in other words, the process. It’s a valid point, and one worth thinking about. So often the choices we make are only represented by the ends, but that’s not the whole story.

Not too long ago in Boston, Ladyada, Amanda (w0z) and Phil met Stephen Wolfram, they talked about adding features for electrical engineers, as they chatted Stephen typed in notes directly to the “feature request” on his iPad – today we received this email!
Dear Limor Fried,
…you gave us some suggestions for features in Wolfram|Alpha. I thought you might like to see that we finally implemented something in regard to resistance.

When you ask anyone who’s been to a shuttle launch, they always speak of the experience as awesome, fantastic and amazing. They talk about the fire, the smoke and the sound in such vague and grandiose terms that when you have grown up so far from the space coast, that language brings to your foremind the videos of a shuttle being accelerated up past the atmosphere by two tanks of thermite generating 6.6 million pounds of thrust. Despite understanding that I’d be at least six and a half miles out from Launchpad 39A – several miles outside of the kill zone – I imagined that the launch would leave me with retinal and auditory damage, with jellied nerves and that “what just happened,” feeling that you get when you get caught in a explosive shock-wave. I expected physical, visceral awe. I came away with something very different.

This video is an example of why I’m an engineer. Engineering is all about diving in and learning about how to get things done, which ends up being incredibly rewarding and fun! I’ve spent the past year renovating parts of the house I live in, so here’s a snippet about installing doors, wall and trim.

The hardware design process is fraught with pitfalls, from library component sketchiness, parts availability, erroneous data sheets, underestimates of complexity and long lead times. Designing good hardware on time, on budget and to specifications is like being in a knife fight. Hardware will cut you. I will present my methods for managing blood loss in the hardware design and production arena.

A hacker group known as the Ninjas has created what may be the best DefCon badge ever. The badge allows wireless ninja battle between badge holders. Unlike the official badge, attendees can’t buy this one: it’s free.
DefCon, the world’s largest hacker convention, is more than just a group of hackers getting together to exchange the latest exploit code and hacking techniques. It’s a time for hackers who may only see one another once a year, to socialize face to face. One of the most exclusive venues for fraternizing at DefCon is the Ninja party. To attend the party attendees have to know one of the Ninjas and they have to give them a badge.
Our friend Amanda “w0z” helped design the badge and the LCD on the badge is the same one we carry in our shop!
Our favorite part of Maker Faire was the steady stream of parents with their daughters who had built Adafruit kits, watched “Ask an Engineer” and/or just wanted to meet “Ladyada”. Here’s a photo from Jeff that captures it nicely
And on that note, a parent who watches “Ask an Engineer” with their kids each week said that their daughter asked the following question after seeing Ladyada and Amanda (w0z) on a few shows…
“Are there any guy engineers? Or are they all women?”
We will be broadcasting live from Microsoft NERD, Cambridge, MA during O’Reilly’s “Foo Camp East”. We’re not sure exactly how it will go since it’s a mobile broadcast, but we’re going to give it a go. We’ll have a special guest(s) – they “may” include… Amanda “w0z” Wozniack, Becky Stern, Leah Buechley and others.
