Layer by Layer: Design a camera monitor enclosure #3DThursday #3DPrinting

00

DIY monitor for DSLR cameras or any HDMI device! This custom 3d printed enclosure houses the display and components.

The mounting elements were designed using the loft and projection features in 123D Design. Here are a couple of the steps we used to build the geometry for the monitor enclosure.

01
The design file includes all of the original solids, so you can easily adjust the dimensions for a bigger screen size, or using different threads for mounting to tripods or even different battery holders.

Download the design file from here: http://www.thingiverse.com/download:959504

03
The diameter of the tripod mount is designed for a 1/4″ to 3/8″ Convert Screw Adapter for Tripod, but you can easily update the inner wall to fit a different thread.

03

To add the corner mounting tabs, we’ll start off with a box and add fillets to the two adjacent corners.

07

Select the project feature to build the outer shape of the loft.

10

To connect the loft to the inside of the enclosure, we’ll rotate the shape by editing the pivot point and moving it to the corner.

12

Make a copy first and then rotate the shape -90 degrees so that it is up against the inner wall of the enclosure.

13
Adjust the position of the second sketch so that the it is aligned close to the original.

14
Select the loft feature and select the two shapes to create the geometry. If you get an error, try moving the rotated sketch closer or farther from the original.

15

Make sure to select the “New solid” option before accepting the loft feature.

17

The included cylinder can be used with #4-40 phillips screws. Select the subtract feature to complete the mounting element for the screws.

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!
