Sunset Overdrive Captain Ahab Build

Harrison Krix of Volpin Props had the chance to attend E3 over the summer and ended up working on some new projects because of it. E3 is a video game convention where publishers and develops show off their newest projects. Attendance is limitd to press and professionals. Krix took advantage of the opportunity and visited the booths and tried to talk to as many companies as he could about making props for them. His networking skills paid off because he received a call and was tasked with making two detailed replicas of props from Sunset Overdrive by Insomniac Games.

The first prop was an air powered spear gun called Captain Ahab. The gun has a harpoon and is tethered to a bottle of Over Charge Delirium XT. And in case you’re wondering, yes those are Mentos on top of the gun.

Krix started the project with lathe and tooled the parts for the canister from foam. He vacuum formed the foam from white styrene. Materials used in the rest of the build include urethane foam, metal washers, electrical crimp connectors, dowel rods, and 2-part acrylic cement among others.

He took pictures of each step along the way, and as usual, it’s fascinating to watch a prop this detailed come to life.
