3DxGames – Pocket-Tactics: dutchmogul’s unique approach to 3D printed tabletop gaming #3DxGames #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Today on our weekly live 3D Hangouts we are celebrating the many ways that 3D printing intersects with the worlds of games, gaming, gamers, and gamer fandom. (And we tackled a challenging Halo cosplay project!) Here’s a quick roundup of a few other 3DxGames projects that caught our interest to whet your appetite!

Arian Croft (“dutchmogul“) has been one of the leading designers bringing tabletop gaming into the 3D printing era.

This past March we invited Jim/Zheng3 as a guest curator to suggest interesting designers to watch, and he had this to say about dutchmogul/pocket tactics:

One cannot write about 3d printing and games without mentioning Arian Croft’s Pocket Tactics. You just can’t, Nemo.

Pocket Tactics has been around a while and has cemented its position as King Under the Mountain in 3d-printed tile-based strategy games. Ever prolific, Croft and partner-in-crime Jeremy Larsen crank out a new model for Pocket Tactics every 37 seconds or so. They’ve made all their rules and models available for free download on Thingiverse. Be warned: you’ll need some actual talent to paint your prints as well as Arian and Jeremy have. (read more)

Here are more details from the Pocket Tactics project site:

Pocket-Tactics is a tile-based strategy game in which fantasy forces battle for control of the world. The game is fast-paced (most games lasting between 20-45 minutes) and is so small that it all fits in a little felt bag and the play area rarely takes up more than a foot of table space. The system is dynamic though resolution is quick and there aren’t a ton of rules to track or memorize, making it ideal for advanced and casual gamers alike.

We’re working on a Kickstarter campaign so that we can produce Pocket-Tactics on a larger scale, but in the meantime it is already available to the 3D printing community!  You can download the most current rules from the Thingiverse

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The Adafruit Learning System has dozens of great tools to get you well on your way to creating incredible works of engineering, interactive art, and design with your 3D printer! We also offer the LulzBot TAZ – Open source 3D Printer and the Printrbot Simple Metal 3D Printer in our store. If you’ve made a cool project that combines 3D printing and electronics, be sure to let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
