DIY Wolverine Claws Made from Fiberglass

Halloween is only six weeks away, and it’s never too early to start working on your costume. If you’re thinking about dressing as Wolverine, Imgur user makeitifyoubelieve documented how he built Wolverine’s claws from fiberglass. Even if you don’t need faux adamantium claws, the tutorial is work looking at if you’re at all curious about working with fiberglass.

Makeitifyoubelieve based the claws on the ones from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He saved stills and calculated the thickness of the claws, the length, etc. by using the ratio of Hugh Jackman’s forearm to the size of the claws. He made templates from that information and then started working on the fiberglass resin. Here are some of the supplies he used:

A few of the supplies I used; Fiberglass resin (available in the Fred Meyer automotive section for relatively cheap – comes with the hardener), nitrile gloves (fiberglass matte is very itchy and resin is very sticky), scissors, heat gun (helps the resin harden/dry faster when it’s cold outside) etc.

He poured the fiberglass resin and hardener over a picture frame topped with cardboard, foil, and fiberglass matte sheets:

Mix your fiberglass resin and hardener according to the instructions on the container and apply it to the first layer of fiberglass matte using a brush. I used a dabbing technique to ensure the least amount of air bubbles could be trapped between the foil and the matte as well as between layers. Make sure you have no dry spots in your matte and that each sheet is fully saturated in resin before moving on.
