#Dune Art and What It Says About Life

12185-1

Frank Herbert’s Dune is a story full of rich visuals, characters, and creatures. We’ve seen some of that evidenced in our round-up of Dune cosplay and props, and illustrations of the science fiction story reinforce it. Science Friday reports that American illustrator John Schoenherr became the go-to illustrator for Dune and turned Herbert’s words in art which initially ran in Analog Magazine. Apparently science writer Carl Zimmer became a fan of Schoenherr’s work and said,

“I started to realize that, actually, living things on Earth are aliens in a way,” says Zimmer, whose fascination with bizarre biology persists today. “If you really get to know a snapping turtle, or an earthworm, or a tick, or a bird really well, it becomes a very strange thing.”

Read more and listen to an interview with Zimmer at Science Friday.
