Adafruit customer Mel recently sent in her incredible project from Maker Faire 2014. Awesome build Mel!

I recently built a wearable electronic project for Maker Faire 2014. My input sensor is product ID 164 from your store (proximity sensor), which provides an input signal to the Arduino Pro Mini to raise the wings and change colors in the back plate (here’s a brief video of it working: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKOVdKJmlaU ). On the other side of the suit (not pictured) is one of your neopixel rings :D

Love your products, teaching, and the support you guys provide for the electronics community. Every technical support issue I’ve ever had (mostly me realizing I need more stuff than I had actually ordered the night before) has been taken care of with *alarming* alacrity. Thanks for all you guys do!

See more photos of Mel’s project here.

IR distance sensor includes cable (10cm-80cm): This SHARP distance sensor bounces IR off objects to determine how far away they are. It returns an analog voltage that can be used to determine how close the nearest object is. Comes with 12″ long 3-JST interface wire. These sensors are good for short-range detection. For over 1 m distance, we suggest using sonar sensors. Read more.

NeoPixel Ring – 24 x WS2812 5050 RGB LED with Integrated Drivers: Round and round and round they go! 24 ultra bright smart LED NeoPixels are arranged in a circle with 2.6″ (66mm) outer diameter. The rings are ‘chainable’ – connect the output pin of one to the input pin of another. Use only one microcontroller pin to control as many as you can chain together! Each LED is addressable as the driver chip is inside the LED. Each one has ~18mA constant current drive so the color will be very consistent even if the voltage varies, and no external choke resistors are required making the design slim. Power the whole thing with 5VDC and you’re ready to rock. Read more.
