STEMtastic Saturday – A Big Success and Lots of Fun! #makereducation

On Saturday May 3rd, I stopped by the STEMTASTIC Saturday festival in Larchmont, NY to check out the exciting projects and activities being showcased by the local maker community. The STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck sponsored the event, which included projects by young engineers, hands-on activities, vendors, workshops and career roundtables. I was very impressed with the range of STEM projects on display – from robotics, circuits projects, Raspberry Pi projects, and many more. Spanning the entire middle school, it had something for all of the estimated 2,000 attendees – and we even spotted some Adafruit gear!

One of my favorite hands-on experiences was the Nerdy Derby from the World Maker Faire. Kids and adults worked together to build and race their own mini cars.

Many of the projects used basic, everyday materials to solve questions about energy systems and electronics. For example, the project featured below answers the question: Can I make a spark with water?

Some local educators showcased their own personal STEM projects alongside students and professionals. Art teacher Maria Barajas displayed her work made from recycled materials. Her robot sculpture was a big hit!

Being a sucker for animated gifs, it was a real treat to spot the Adafruit RFID/NFC Shield being put to work on The Animated Gif Machine project featured below:

I wish I had the time to attend one of the many awesome workshops available, which ranged from Making, Tinkering, and Inventing Across Disciplines to Female STEM Experts in Engineering. It’s a Girl Thing and much more. The workshops were taught by educators and professionals from MIT, Yale, University of Chicago, Ford, Mt. Sinai (and more!) who are experts in various STEM fields. It was a wonderful day filled with so may fun activities. It was great to see a local maker organization so dedicated to learning and sharing with their community. I suggest checking it out next year if you’re in the area!
