#maketheworld – Announcing Make The World: Prosthetics – Friday 10/4/2013 8pm ET on Google+

Make The World: Prosthetics is a one month program on Google+ aimed at crowdsourcing the manufacturing and delivery of the Robohand prosthetic to people in need. The program will be hosted by Adafruit’s Limor Fried, Matt Griffin and Phillip Torrone. Key partners on the program include Robohand, MakerBot, The Open Hand Project, Anthromod, Prosthetics for Prosperity, e­NABLE, The Lucky Fin Project and Hands for Africa.

Adafruit’s Makers, Hackers, Artists and Engineers Community under the subsection “Make The World” is hosting this month long effort. Community members will post up with what they can help with, suggest people in need, and post pictures of their accomplishments/builds. In addition Makers will be able to find support for the creation of Robohands in the e­NABLE Community on Google+.

  • October 4th, 8pm ET – One hour introduction to the challenge with notable inventors and non­profits in the sector. MakerBot, Robohand, The Lucky Fin Project.
  • October 11th, 8pm ET – Community Check In ­ inviting a notable Maker to chat with Makers from the Community to show how far they have come along with their project. Prosthetics for Prosperity, e-NABLE, Google Science Fair.
  • October 18th, 8pm ET – 30 min Community Check In ­ inviting a notable Maker to chat with Makers from the Community to show how far they have come along with their project. Robohand, Hands for Africa and The Open Hand Project.
  • October 25th, 8pm ET – One hour Recap of the past month. Robohand, Anthromod, Robohand.

This Friday we’ll have our first Hangout on Air, a one hour introduction to the challenge with notable inventors and non-­profits in the sector.     Please watch the video above. His story is at around 1:13 into the video.. You can see how he lost his leg and hand – he and thousands of other people, he was starving in North Korea and he was trying to get coal off of a train, to sell for food, but he was hungry and he lost consciousness, and he slipped and the train ran over him, he lost his leg and hand. He is very very lucky to be alive. They did not have anesthetics.

    He’s clearly a very smart guy because even missing his hand and leg, he managed to escape from North Korea.

    His name now is Ji Seong Ho-

    He would be a great candidate for a myoelectric prosthesis. he lives in South Korea now. I left my email, I could probably track him down.
