The BeagleBone Black is starting to show up in more and more Kickstarter and Indiegogo projects and this one stands out. The Sky Drone FPV uses the BeagleBone Black to compress and securely stream video digitally over a cellular modem from a USB camera to a mobile phone or tablet application that can be used to fly an RC airplane or quadcopter. The ability to fly anywhere with 3G/4G cellular network service makes this flight solution rather unique and able to support an essentially unlimited range, as long as you stay in-network and have battery power.
While it doesn’t look like they have any announced plans to share their software, the hardware is essentially off-the-shelf. Source code from BeagleBone Based open source projects like OpenROV could serve as a basis for building one of these systems on your own from scratch. Expect to see more projects like this on the near horizon.Related
