Automaton of Queen Marie Antoinette, The Dulcimer Player

 

Automata were the clockwork precursors to robots. David Roentgen was a master cabinetmaker in Europe in the 18th century whose elaborate desks, many with hidden compartments, and clocks were collected by royalty.

  1. David Roentgen a master cabinetmaker and Peter Kinzing a master clockmaker worked closely together. They both settled in Neuwied, a town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. My deepest respect for artisans like them.
