Android (finally!) Gets BT LE (AKA BT Smart) Support

jb-btle

Yesterday Google announced the release of Android 4.3, which includes a number of small updates.  The biggest announcement (from an embedded point of view), though, is finally(!) adding an official Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy stack and API into the main branch.  BTLE (marketed lately as BT Smart) support in Android means that both iOS and Android can now speak a common language to any BT LE peripherals, along with the latest version of Windows Phone and Blackberry, which is a pretty compelling argument for engineers and product designers.  There are some significant design tradeoffs using BT LE … it trades speed for a low energy footprint … but it should grow in important in the coming months and years as the mobile space takes over more and more of the tasks that were once limited to desktop environments.
