NASA has awarded Anjan, an employee at Systems and Materials Research Corporation a contract to develop a universal prototype for 3D printed, synthesized foods designed for consumption in outer space. The first test run will involve a 3D printed pizza, with layers of pizza dough, followed by tomato and cheese. The software is will be open source, and based on the existing open-source ‘rep rap mendel‘ 3D printer. The endeavor is an effort to create food with a 30-year shelf life, enabling NASA to send humans to Mars (or at least it would take care of their caloric needs). via designboom.
