Yes hackerspaces gone commercial, but also *workshops* done right.
TechShops are more like a gym than a hackerspace. My experience with hackerspaces has been they are more about the politics of running the space and less about helping people build things.
TS also has equipment I have never seen at any other hackerspace I have visited.
Since the equipment and the work areas at TS are maintained by a dedicated staff, equipment is almost always available and there is always someone that can help.
The members at my TS are also easier to interact with compared to the local hackerspace. I can talk about my project without them explaining why their idea is better before I ever explained mine. Or my other favorite, how how linux would do everything better even though my project is entirely mechanical.
