  5. What are the ones that can make letters — 14 segment LEDs? I never see them used in projects. Are they more difficult to deal with? More expensive? Less available? Those would be interesting to use.

  6. 14 segment displays and more complete 16 segment displays cost somewhat more to produce than a seven segment.

    The bigger issue is that they are not as widely used, making them less available, and more expensive, in a feedback cycle.

    Also, while a 4 digit display possibly with colons and or decimal separators is a very useful size for 7 segment displays, for alphanumeric displays more characters are frequently needed.

    While scrolling can alleviate this, having at least 6 visible characters at a time can greatly increase legibility, but adding quite a bit of cost to a small project.
