New MakerBot Replicator 2 and 2X, MakerWare and more

I’m at the MakerBot press release and just watched Bre Pettis unveil the Replicator 2 desktop 3D printer. It’s got a steel frame with a PVC exoskeleton. It prints much bigger objects than the original replicator, but the machine is the same size, and the price is $2199 targeted at “prosumers.” You can watch the press release live on MakerBot’s site. Bre’s also announcing the MakerBot 2X ($2799), the “experimenter’s” 3D printer with duel extrusion, a heated build platform, and other experimental features. They’re also releasing software: MakerWare is the new 3D software by MakerBot.

MakerBot is even opening a retail store in NoHo, Manhattan. And if that wasn’t enough, Bre is on the cover of Wird holding the new machine.
