I have designed an adapter that slides right in the SD card slot and does not require modifying the raspberry pi.
There are gerber files so you can send them do http://dorkbotpdx.org/ or some other prototyping service.

Why?
Micro SD is slower than regular sd, and this thing appears more fragile than the original (already fragile) card reader
