One hacker has her own idea of what a Lego set for girls should be. If 10,000 people agree with her, the toymaker could find itself producing her hacker-focused design.
This week, Fried and business partner Phillip Torrone unveiled Ladyada’s Workshop, a Lego set they designed that features Ladyada (Fried’s hacker alter ego, wearing her work outfit) in her comfort zone: a workshop with a pick-and-place machine, a laser cutter, a sewing machine, a soldering station, a computer, a microscope, and shelves of parts and packages. And for good measure, her cat, Mosfet, looks on admiringly.
I am happy to see a true Lego set for girls- one that encourages computing and science as an avenue. I usually do not see many commercials(thanks TEVO) but I was physically sickened when I saw the Lego brand selling Lego ‘dolls’ in pink for girls! Ugh.
When I was young (back in ’72 when I was 5) I clearly remember my best friend, Philip, had battery run ‘Lego with wheels’ set- we played for hours building and rebuilding all sorts of vehicles~ why did Lego people feel it would take a doll/pink to grab another demographic?? My daughter (now 10) has been learning soldering, circuitry, & she definitely has the mind of a future maker. She loves original Lego in all their primary colored glory.
Thanks for collaborating with them to make another option for kids- boys and girls to see themselves someday as being an entrepeneur, working in a lab, computing, and designing away on all the cool equipment! I love the mini-3D printer! The tiny Adafruit logo on the computer is a nice touch too.
I will make sure I get out the word on the vote:)
So this brought up a little debate in my house. Some girls are "girly" in the sense that they like hot pink, but they may also be into science and stereotypical guy things…and on the flip side there are boys who like "boy colors" and yet like to cook and do stereotypical girl things.
So I guess my strange opinion is that since there are already lots of science related lego in typical boy colors and Lego seems to want to make kitchen sets in hot pink, would the best thing to break down stereotypes be to create hot pink science lego sets and boy colored kitchen sets?
…and as a side note, the Adafruit lego set looks dope, especially the laser cutter and pick & place machine.
