   Wonderful video! Ahh.. the good ol’ days of Whitworth threading, cotter pin cranks and rebuilding Sturmey-Archer three speed hubs.

   I’ll have to show the video to my boys- they’ll probably ask if I dressed like that back when I designed bikes.

   How times have changed. Its striking that not a single worker was wearing anything resembling saftey-glasses. The only ones wearing gloves were the ones handling red-hot steel. The guy using his bare hands to dip the frames into the enamel must have had quite a job scrubbing up after work and the guy spot-welding the mudguards must have achieved a zen-like state to ignore the sparks that must surely have been hitting him all the time (hands and face).

   As western society has become more litigous it sometimes seems that the “health-and-safety” brigade have gone mad but when you think about how many injuries must have arisen in factories like this it becomes a little easier to appreciate what the other extreme is like and to see that perhaps things aren’t as bad as they might be.

   Eamonn stated it so well. I could hardly watch any of it without thinking that the safety conditions were non-existent.

   Especially the guy dipping his hands in the enamel.
   Who knows what fumes they breathed in?

   It’s just like working in Foxconn building an iPhone!
