Birth of the ARM: Acorn Archimedes Promo from 1987

“If innovation was required, it would have to be created.”

I’m guessing the intended audience for this piece was prospective developers and enterprise clients, because it goes into far more technical detail than a mere consumer ad. It’s a neat snapshot of history with a good deal of information, and the music is just begging for a Glitch Mob remix.

  1. Enterprise clients? Nah. As with the BBC Micros before it, the vast majority of Archimedes systems were sold to schools.

  2. Just because they were sold to schools doesn’t mean they were exclusively marketed to schools. If this video were aimed at schools, they would have talked about classroom integration and learning software, not backward compatibility with biz. apps.

The reason most BBC computers ended up in classrooms was because the program was subsidized as part of the BBC educational mandate.
