NEW PRODUCT – Round Solar Panel Skill Badge – 5V / 40mA. This skill badge is a self-fulfilling one! Normally you would get the badge after the project is done, but in this case, the badge can be part of the project! The solar panel is epoxied into a round disc 55mm diameter (about 2.2 inches), its rugged and looks cool besides. We include a sticky foam pin back you can attach to the back of the panel to mount it onto a backpack, jacket or sash.

Of course, it also is a perfectly functional solar panel. There are 10 slivers of solar cell inside for a 5V rated voltage in sun. The output is about 40mA when in bright sun, less in shade or cloudy weather. You can use this to power small, low power projects with a small low power microcontroller or chip and maybe an LED.

The epoxy coating makes this panel rugged and waterproof on the front. The back has points for soldering. If you want to make this fully waterproof you’ll need to dab waterproof epoxy onto the back to cover the solder points once you’ve attached wires.

  1. I love it. :) It would be totally awesome if we could chain them – have 4 or 20 stuck on a backpack to juice-up iphones and run our Flora gear.

    I’m actually working harder to finish the RiderX projects because I want to dive into this when it comes out! You tease us by selling needles and stainless thread! ;)

    My dream would be to run an Arduino Mega XNP rig on my belt that communicates to the Flora sown into different garmets that I have in my kit while wirelessly talking about. Food for thought – have you any plans to make convenient connectors that could be used to plug Flora together from different clothing articles? I mean if I have 3 pair electrically warmed socks that are temperature controlled by a Flora, how would I connect them to my central personal MCP? Wireless might work but that would take another Flora and gear. Having a convenient connector that can be used to tie Flora into a grid would, at least to me, be a cool add-on.

    Anyhow, I can’t wait for all this to come out!!! :)
