Wacom introduces Inkling, a new digital sketch pen that captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper.

We are getting this for ourselves and for our engineer friends who sketch their designs a lot.

  1. Standard ballpoint pen refills? Use any paper? I’m definitely keeping an eye out for the first round of reviews.

    The "+/- 2.5mm" accuracy spec seems worrisome, but then again the site isn’t really clear on exactly what that figure means. I’ll happily take 2.5mm worth of systematic error between page extents as long as I get decent repeatability and no blatant jitter or distortion. It’s not like I can draw a straight line in the first place…

  2. Looks like a nice tool. Drawing with a mouse is awful and tablets are too bulky. Vectorized scans generally need a lot of cleanup.

    Now if they could make it work with my trusty 0.7mm pencil…

  3. There isnt much new here, i remember this sort of stuff being very popular to manufacture a couple of years ago, with pens taking your digital signature and whatnot.. In the end it all ended in the trash heap.. I sincerely hope wacom can do better ^^

  4. One thing to watch out for is that you need to be at least 2 centimeters from the receiver when directly in front of it and possibly even further out to either side, depending on the angle covered by the receiver. The accuracy also drops to +/- 5 mm as you get near the edges.

    It isn’t horrible, but if you aren’t aware of it, it can be an unpleasant surprise. Also, as the emitter is in the pen, don’t cover the "vanes" near the point.

    That said, the cartridge change looks simple and not having to pay ridiculous prices for special paper is awesome
