“Cannon” is a project by Virginia Tech personnel Doug DeCarme, Shaver Deyerle and Zach Rattner:
Cannon is an open source (GPL) Android and Arduino project that allows a smartphone to fire objects from a PVC pneumatic cannon. The communication between the smartphone and the cannon takes place wirelessly via Bluetooth, allowing the phone to be up to approximately 30 feet from the cannon.
This project was developed in July 2011 by three Qualcomm employees from Virginia Tech. Qualcomm hosts a “Battle of the Schools” competition in every summer. This year, entries were to be homemade contraptions, and they were judged according to how cool they were perceived to be. Virginia Tech’s Cannon tied Michigan State for first place.
