Our zen-cart mods/hacks/tips & tricks – Forcing shipping method by value

We ship via UPS and USPS (postal). Postal is great, inexpensive and fairly fast. One thing it isn’t is automatically insured or tracked. Because of this we externally insure all packages including USPS but still, we found that shipping expensive things by USPS was not a great idea. That’s what UPS is for, which is a trackable service that has better systems in place for valuables. So, for orders over $200, we force domestic customers to use UPS as opposed to USPS. Here’s how to set an arbitrary limit on the usps shipping module…

  1. Using Endicia Professional for our USPS shipping here. You can use Endicia’s insurance program and can set up everything for Priority and Express to automatically be assigned tracking numbers and have the track info emailed to the customer.

So far, the claims process through Endicia’s insurance program has been pretty smooth. We used to have a fairly low limit on USPS packages because insurance claims required waiting for Ragnarok and tracking was nonexistent.

Our nicest feature was automating address and package information import. The single label for US shipments and laser-printed 4-part paperwork for APO and International has eliminated all the little flappy tags and scraps that always required laborious manual attention.

Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement, it’s not. We just converted from an imprint system that basically caused us to not use the USPS to a system where a quarter of our packages are now going out to our customers at a nice savings for the both of us.
