AC vs. DC

My favorite part is when Westinghouse Tesla wins.

  1. We must never forget Charles Proteus Steinmetz, the employee of Westinghouse, whose work made long distance transmission of AC power possible completely circumventing the short distance and high loss of DC that would require a generator in every little population center. Without his work, Tesla’s inventions involving the three phase motor and AC power would have suffered.

Charles Steinmetz work with lamination, silicon alloy steel and the discovery, mathematical analysis and understanding of magnetic hysteresis allowed a vast improvement in the efficiency of AC generators, transformers and AC motors by reducing eddy currents and the resistance to magnetic polarity change that caused early equipment to expend most of the power as heat.

He also was instrumental in creating the (at the time) largest artificial lightning generator for use among other things to improve AC transmission lines.
