Straight from Massimo who is part of the Arduino team, Phil made a conservative estimate of about 250,000 but it’s at least 300,000 as of May 13th, 2011. Lots of folks are always wondering what the “Arduino market share” is or how many are out there. This is a data point. The Arduino team will have a presentation next week at Maker Faire, with all sorts of exciting news and information like this!

Once I am done with all of my “someday” Arduino projects, my guess is that my home will have about ten Arduinos doing things around here.

The thing about Arduino WRT market-share is that, because it crosses over several distinct markets, it’s probably hard to track it.
It’s an entry-level electronics learning tool, an embedded development platform, a robotics controller; and it wouldn’t be such a stretch to say it’s even an artistic tool, akin to a paintbrush or a lens.

Is that 300,000 of all Arduinos? Official / unofficial? Uno / Mega / etc.?
I’m wondering about the Boarduinos / Seeeduinos / Freeduinos / etceter-uinos out there…
If 300,000 is ‘only’ the official ones, then I’d bet the figure is closer to double that when you factor in all the ‘compatible’ boards, homebrew, and other projects out there.
Just with myself I have 7 ‘arduino compatible’ boards / projects — my first two ‘official Arduinos’ (a pair of Megas) have been ordered but aren’t here yet.

Given that you can implement Arduino very simply even without USB part, I agree that there must be at *least* double Ardunio-based boards out there
