Kinect-enabled Personal Robot Avoids Obstacles

(note: no audio)

from GeckoSystems:

This video shows a GeckoSystems’ Carebot(tm), equipped with a pair of Microsoft Kinect sensors, navigating through a narrow passageway cluttered with various obstacles. This represents the worst case for in-home navigation.

Kinect processing is handled by a piece of software called GeckoImager, running on a dual core 1.66GHz Intel Atom motherboard. The navigation is handled by two other GeckoSavants(tm), GeckoNav and GeckoSuper, running on a separate dual core Atom machine. Both computers were located on the robot during the video.

Neato!

I wonder if the motor drive uses Spacely Sprockets or Cogswell’s Cogs…

  1. How could those folks possibly claim that a cluttered hallway represents a worse case for wheeled navigation? I’ll see their clutter, and raise them a set of stairs, plus children and animals underfoot, times eight inches of water on the floor, to the power of a cloud of smoke.

I understand of course that this is a work in progress, and wish them luck in their efforts. But if I am going to trust my frail and memory-constrained Nana’s well being to a robot, I would like to know that it can handle a far worser “worst case scenario” than a couple of boxes in the hall.
