When the news came out that hackers had jumped on the opportunity to tinker with Microsoft’s new Kinect game controller — making it do “things it really wasn’t meant to do,” in the words of a New York Times reporter — most of the coverage was very inside-baseball. Once wholly in the hands of managers (the “visible hands” chronicled by industrial age historian Alfred Chandler), technology innovation used to begin with a company’s commitment of resources to R&D and patent protection. If and when the technology succeeded, that company stood to reap the rewards through the differentiation in its products, and often also by licensing the new intellectual property.

The Arduino Ethernet Shield (assembled) allows an Arduino board to connect to the internet. It is based on the Wiznet W5100 ethernet chip (datasheet). The Wiznet W5100 provides a network (IP) stack capable of both TCP and UDP. It supports up to four simultaneous socket connections. TronixStuff wrote up an excellent tutorial about using the AREF pin on your Arduino, as well as some info about resolution and how the analog-digital converter works. He writes:
What if we want to measure voltages between 0 and 2, or 0 and 4.6? How would the ADC know what is 100% of our voltage range?
And therein lies the reason for the AREF pin! AREF means Analogue REFerence. It allows us to feed the Arduino a reference voltage from an external power supply. For example, if we want to measure voltages with a maximum range of 3.3V, we would feed a nice smooth 3.3V into the AREF pin – perhaps from a voltage regulator IC. Then the each step of the ADC would represent 3.22 millivolts.
Interestingly enough, our Arduino boards already have some internal reference voltages to make use of. Boards with an ATmega328 microcontroller also have a 1.1V internal reference voltage. If you have a Mega (!), you also have available reference voltages of 1.1 and 2.56V. At the time of writing the lowest workable reference voltage would be 1.1V.

The Israel-based company’s flagship product is a microchip that hears sounds and reads real-world motions and translates them into a 3D grid that devices can process. Founded in 2005, PrimeSense gained prominence last March when Microsoft announced it would be using its sensing technology in Kinect, its 3D videogame system.

Leatherman is no longer offering their tools with torx, they went back to rivets. Here’s a note directly from them to us.
We made a running change to the PS4 and the ES4 within the first couple of months of manufacturing them. We originally designed them to have torx screws, but discovered that the torx screws did not work as we had intended with the handles. It was decided to switch to rivets at that point.
You should not be receiving mixed shipments as we made this change several months ago. I let our warehouse know to check inventory. All inventory at this time are put together with rivets.
We have not yet updated the picture on the website, but will as quickly as possible. All current PS4 and ES4 tools come with rivets.
BACK IN STOCK AND UPDATED – Chumby Hacker Board – v1.0. The Chumby Hacker Board is a cool single board Linux computer that has much of the same hardware as the famous Chumby One. It’s great for people who are experienced with Linux and want to have the power of a microcomputer with audio and video output while at the same time getting all the peripherals of a microcontroller such as analog-to-digital conversion, PWM outputs, sensors, bit twiddling, and broken-out GPIOs!
While we believe that the CHB is a fairly easy-to-use Single Board Computer, having a pre-installed OS on the included uSD card and drivers for the peripherals, it’s not designed for beginners! The board is best used by those with previous Linux experience. The good news is you don’t have to have another Linux computer to set up the CHB but you should have familiarity with shells and shell scripting, gcc, make, dmesg, etc. We also suggest having had some poking around with microcontrollers such as BASIC Stamp, Arduino, AVR, PIC, 8051, etc. So that when we say “i2c” and “not 5v tolerant I/Os” you can follow along.
This is the v1.0 release, slightly updated from the Beta. This version does not have ‘Arduino’ headers on the back anymore, since they were not terribly useful. Instead, the 0.1″ header breakout has been expanded to include more useful pins. This makes the CHB slimmer but just as useful. The SD card has been doubled in size.

When Shigeru Miyamoto was a child, he didn’t really have any toys, so he made his own, out of wood and string. He put on performances with homemade puppets and made cartoon flip-books. He pretended that there were magical realms hidden behind the sliding shoji screens in his family’s little house. There was no television. His parents were of modest means but hardly poor. This was in the late nineteen-fifties and early nineteen-sixties, in the rural village of Sonobe, about thirty miles northwest of Kyoto, in a river valley surrounded by wooded mountains.
In his games, Miyamoto has always tried to re-create his childhood wonderment, if not always the actual experiences that gave rise to it, since the experiences themselves may be harder to come by in a paved and partitioned world. “I can still recall the kind of sensation I had when I was in a small river, and I was searching with my hands beneath a rock, and something hit my finger, and I noticed it was a fish,” he told me one day. “That’s something that I just can’t express in words. It’s such an unusual situation. I wish that children nowadays could have similar experiences, but it’s not very easy.”
