Here’s the latest statement from Microsoft regarding the Adafruit… Kinect bounty:
“Someone has created drivers that allow other devices to display the raw data that is output from Kinect for Xbox 360. We are perfectly comfortable with hobbyists taking advantage of that raw data,” the company said in a statement to Bloomberg.
Likely the last statement on this and great way to end our experiment, thanks everyone!

This is a cool win for open source and for what hacking really is, learning about stuff and doing cool things with your new knowledge.

Remember Microsoft, crack kills. We sincerely hope so. Hey, remember when you told me I couldn’t use my computer till I authenticated? Well….. I went out and bought RETESTRAK YAY!!!!!! Hope your perfectly comfortable with that, too. Oh, and my awesome debian distro. yeah. comfortable…..

So they should be!
There are two ways to look at this:
1. If they had carried on with the alternative view, they would have alienated themselves from a large number of people who use their software and enjoy making modifications to hardware, some of whom might be a little resentful about big business telling them what they can and cannot do with something they have just bought.
2. With this approach, they boost sales, after all you may not have an X-box, but still want to enjoy tinkering with the Kinect, they encourage the next generation of hardware and software engineers to use their imagination and enthusiasm, they may even enrich the PC games market which seems to be stagnating at the moment under the pressure from consoles.
