Arduino + RFID

Arduino RFID Security Access @ App Delegate Inc

I was at Radio Shack the other day and came across a nice little gem. This RFID reader is selling on clearance for $8, when it normally goes for $40. It comes with two tags. The ones I got are a credit card sized version, and a disc version. I couldn’t resist, so I bought it and spent 20 minutes getting it working with my Arduino Decimilia (yes, yes, I know it’s outdated). Be warned, these are only sold in stores and are on clearance, so call your local Radio Shack before stopping by to pick one up. You can buy the more expensive ones at the Parallax web store. You can buy Arduinos in many places, including Amazon.

  1. I also found the same one at a local store(they were out at the time, but they were able to order me one in at the $8 price) so if your store is out see if they can order it in from another store

  2. SWEET! I’m gonna see if I can’t pick me up one tomorrow. I’ve got an idea for a project…

  3. Woo hoo! Ran out last night and they had 2 at my local Radio Shack. The clearance price is real. Looks simple enough, and the guy at App Delegate already provided some Arduino code to use it.

I was surprised to notice that the antenna on the receiver is on BOTH side of the circuit board. I didn’t trace it out to see if that makes one or two antennae.

But this is definitely going to be fun. Time to see how things WORK. First step, hook it up, maybe add in an LCD and see what different codes come up.

  4. what exactly is producing this weird sound??

  5. @ItchMan, it’s a piezo speaker. Crappy camera though. Here’s a better version http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1765741
