Some tips from the Adafruit customer forums – “Mouser shipping tips to save money”… Post yours in the comments!
So what I’ve been doing to help avoid these unexpected charges is just add a note to my order when I check out. I’ve received about 5 orders now, all very carefully packaged, all making the best use of space – and best of all – no more huge shipping charges! Woot! Now I’m saving about $30 an order.
…another tip with mouser – if you’re spending more than 150 or so, choose UPS ground. they’ll often upgrade it to 3 or 2 day air if you spend over (150? 200? 300? not sure precisely)

Both Mouser and Digikey are great suppliers, but Mouser gets the nod for often (but not always) having lower prices, and NO Minimum order charge! Only rub is that they DON’T have as large an inventory as Digikey and some of the less common parts end up being more expensive. I was looking for a UHF oscilator module and Digikey had what I wanted for about $50 less! (That was VERY unusual!) Most of the time Mouser is a bit cheaper. The only time I had a gripe with them was over a defective lead acid battery I had to return, and they would not pick up the return shipping charges. (That was before USPS flat rate boxes too!)

Mouser also gets points for, IMO, having a better web interface. I like, for example, that you can reset individual fields within the search boxes, and the way it displays “# remaining”, though sometimes this number is deceptive.
Also, using Mouser makes me feel like I am playing Super Mario Bros. 2 instead of doing work.

I generally select a shipping method, but always add “cheapest shipping possible” and they are usually attentive to that, unlike Newegg, who always blatantly ignores it. If I get a small parts order, it’s generally only about $3.90 and they ship it USPS. I don’t really care if they track it since the package is going across town through the same main post office in Dallas. That being the case, I’ve never tried cash and carry with them, and don’t know if it is even an option, but at $3.90, it’s cheaper to have it shipped than what gas would cost to drive to Ft. Worth (Mansfield) and back.
