Reader Albert Y. from Seattle, Washington sent in his latest creation. It is a scope clock based off of the Thiem-Work components. He was helped by Eric C. both in vision and execution. It has a similar styling with the exposed CRT and the (what appears to be) aluminum base. Nice work!

This is a whimsical design and a very interesting project. I have been looking into making a similar clock….all I need now is to find a warehouse full of cheap Russian CRT’s….

I wish you had added a Tesla coil next to it then the whole thing would have been perfect. Can I build one of these? How do keep the dangerous high voltage out of sight? Or is it?

Nguyen, Look real closely at the top of the metal chassis. The red insulated wire coming out of the middle of the chassis is connected to the anode connector on the side of the tube. This is the high voltage connection to the tube. I still would not want to try to remove it while operating or you may get an owie!…

Wow, my clock actually ended up here. Anyway, the red wire carries +900V and the back of the tube -900V, but everything is insulated and grounded so it’s pretty safe. The red wire is rated for dielectric breakdown of 50kV so no worries about arcing. I added a DPDT switch at the bottom to disable the 6.3VAC and 230VAC supplies to the tube to prevent burn-in. My next mod is to try and get a GPS unit to work on the DCF77 input (radio signal from Germany). Everything is grounded and fused for safety.
