  1. I don’t know how I feel about this iPad business. Apple has lately been pretty much anti-openness. From their iron-fist when it comes to their approved applications, to the fee you must pay to become an official “Apple Developer”, they just don’t seem to care. As an open-source community, I think we should be embracing some of the iPad competitors, like those based on the open-source Android platform, or those running Linux. There are some cool ones out there too! (see the vega [ http://convergeddevices.net/products/vega.html ] or the notion ink adam [ http://gizmodo.com/5471559/notion-ink-adam-tablet-caught-on-video-specs-finalized ]).

    If kids had iPads instead of Commodore 64s in the 80s, how many programmers and electronics tinkerers would we really have today? To me, the iPad represents the end of the hacker culture.
