  1. Why do I have the impression that you need a beard to be taken seriously as an engineer these days? :-)

  2. we’re really excited about all the new people getting in to science and engineering – all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ethnic groups, more gender balance. beards are now accepted in most engineering circles now too, it’s wonderful. there’s even a role for cats like mosfet now.

  3. While most ‘ethnic-groups’ have always been well represented in engineering (better than N.America or Europe I’d say), it’s true that I see a lot more women in engineering these days (both HW and SW). Glad to see that … it gets kind of stuffy surrounded by men all day long. My last job there were around 50 engineers, and there wasn’t a single female on my floor (maybe 20 people), with maybe 2-3 female engineers total in the office. I’ve been glad to see female names attached to a lot of interesting projects and research papers these past few years, though it still seems they’re still better represented in SW than HW. Haven’t seen many cats in either case, though. :-)

Still going to resist the pressure to grow a beard, though. :-)
